I have a 1973 f250 highboy with 390 and dui ignition. After mud racing i let it sit for about a week and it wont start pulled the batery out charged it put it back in started. then about an hour later had to hook jumper cables to get it started. started it runs fine charging good as soon as i turn headlights on it kills the ignition engine dies shut the lights off keeps running. dui gets its power directly from battery. Any ideas where this is shorting out at or what might be happening.
The DUI hooked directly to the battery will drain it. Many automotive batteries will fail just as you describe when drained completely. Sounds like you need to rewire and replace the battery.
I should rephrase the dui deal. It is hooked up to a relay directly from the battery which is activated by the igniton switch. What I am wondering is if anything could be shorting out after getting full of mud and water. I've been racing this pickup for about 5 years and never had any problems before. I had a friend suggest something with the horn relay, I not sure why. Thanks for all of the replies
This sounds like a unique problem so its gonna be hard for the rest of us to diagnose. Lets take a few steps back. Was everything fine till you hooked up the DUI? If it was then theres something that has changed since you installed the DUI. You went from points to an electronic ignition. Think about what you changed before you go chasing other things. If you put everything back the way it was will that fix the problem? Id try that before I start messing with other things like a horn relay that hasnt caused any problems for 25 years.
This problem started after mud racing. Everything got covered with mud and water then the problem began after the mud had dried. The Dui and everything else has been working fine for the last five years. I have been sick for about a week now and havent had time to monkey with it but when i get it figured out i will let you all know the findings.
Try this. Charge the battery at a trickle for 10 to 12 hours. I don't understand why this works but it worked in mine. I had a short which killed the battery. Fixed the short; boosted the battery; ran fine till I shut it off; then dead battery. My buddy put it on trickle for 10 - 12 hours and works fine now. At the very least if it doesn't work you will be sure the battery is bad and atleast part of the problem.
finally had time today to look it after checking for draw and checking battery everything checked fine. So i removed all cables andwires from the solenoid and cleaned everything to the starter and the ground to the block works fine now nothing looked bad so i guess i will see how it goes.
