My "ABS" light came on and stayed on so I took it to my local Ford dealer this morning and left it. They called me this afternoon and informed me that the "ECU" and "HCU" components of my ABS system were bad and had to be replaced. These terms were supposedly short for the "Electronic" and "hydraulic" controls of my ABS system. The repair cost originally quoted was over $2,000.00 and after I argued, they lowered it almost $500.00. I was still unhappy so I told them to put the repair on hold and I'd get back to them tomorrow. Has anyone else had a similar repair done and is this a reasonable price? I still wonder how the electronic and hydraulic control units both went out at the same time. Anyway, I'm tempted to pick up the truck and get a second quote / opinion. I have a 2001 Super Duty, 7.3 ltr. powerstroke diesel, automatic transmission, that looks showroom new with 46,000 miles on the odometer. Thanks, Jeff
It has been my experience that ABS replacement of those items can be very expensive, but, most of the time, they are not the problem. My advice would be to have someone else look at the problem and see if it is the same.
Sometimes an ABS light just means you need to add brake fluid.
Most dealerships don't "repair" things any more. They do routine service. When things like this come in, they "replace" instead of troubleshooting and fixing the truck. The best example of this are transmissions.
Something else you might want to check is the wiring harness at the ABS sensors. The wires run very close to the heat shield just inside the brake rotors. I have seen the insulation on these melted causing a short which resulted in the ABS light comming on.
When it comes to repairs that cost that much, I always want a second opinion. There are too many dishonest people out there who just want to take you to the cleaners.
