6.0 Oil consumption?

General info question - does your 6.0 motor use oil? I'm new to diesels so I'm just wondering what to expect. I've got about 2,500 miles on a truck I bought used, and it just turned over 36,000 total on the odo.

It doesn't seem to have used much if any, but that 6 foot long dipstick makes it pretty hard to really see an accurate level. Even checking it cold after setting overnight I cannot make out a clear level line on the stick.

So, just wondering what all your exeriences have been? Any tips?

Thanks,
Bill

In 37k miles I haven't detected any oil consumption in my rig.

With the dipstick. I revolve it around to see it from a different angle. Very little carbon goes into oil to darken it. I don't use hardly any oil in 5K changes. Have 55K on her.

Hi Bill,

I've got an 03 with the 6.0 and have 48K on mine and it uses no oil.

Keep this in mind since you're new to diesels...unlike our gassers, you have to let the truck sit for a good long while before you get an accurate reading on the dipstick. Unlike the gassers, the diesels have lots of passages that the oil has to drain back from to get a good reading.

I finally learned that I can pull the stick out a full arms length before you get the little gray plastic piece with the hash marks on it. So I pull it out with one arm and grab the metal rod with the other to pull it out in one smooth motion. As bigred mentioned above, if you turn that gray plastic piece at an angle, it's easier to read the level.

So I gather that it's not normal for the diesel to use oil. I've read that fuel getting into the oil was common, so I thought that using a little oil might be expected too. Nice to know it's not.

I don't think mine is using oil either. But it did have head gaskets replaced under warranty before I bought it, as seen on Oasis, so I'm cautious and hoping there is no long term damage from that.
