After seeing and reading the post about what you think will happen of the V10. I was curious what everyone would do if/when they upgrade (if you can call it 'upgrading' losing the V10) to in the newer truck. With all the speculation as to what engines will be available in the SD, I'm unsure of what I would buy. I personally want to stay with the SD after having this one. I have a 2002 250 ext cab 4X4 Off Road SD. Do you wait for the 6.2L Boss or switch the (besides the 7.3L) unproven diesel. I know I shouldn't use that word in here, but I'm curious what everyone would buy if the V10 wasn't an option.
Having the little knowledge and experience with the engine capabilities, but a gearhead none-the-less, I don't know what I would chose. Knowing that the Boss was a mean engine in the Mustang many years ago, doesn't translate to a 3/4-1 ton truck in todays time.
Let me know what you guys (and girls if applicable) will go with.
As a side note, I also wanted to know what the Off Road Pkg does to the towing capacity?? Keeping in mind I haven't made any engine/powertrain upgrades. I don't do alot of towing (small trailer for my lawn mower), but there is the possiblty for a camper in the future.
This is a new subject to me. I didn't know the V10 was on it's way out. But what I understand from this post is the new gas engine will be a 6.2L Boss. Remember the Boss Mustang was a 5.0L, 302 CI. Chevy uses a 6.0L gas that is a pretty good runner. 345hp. I have talked to guys with the 6.0L engine in 3/4 ton Chevys and they say they run great. In fact they are getting around 15-16 MPG with 4x4s.
So a 6.2L Boss Ford should be a power house. I would have to see the specs on it. but being a guy that runs gas, because I don't care for the Ford Diesel. I would look real hard at the new Ford gas engine. Right now Ford puts the 5.4L in the 3/4 & 1 tons.
With all of the new emission requirements (and rumors of more on the horizon), I'm not sure I would go with a diesel. I did the math for a long time when I needed to go bigger than my old F150, and the diesel never added up for me. I've heard that the new Ultra Low Sulfer diesel fuel and added cats, have caused the newer diesels to loose some the mpg's and power... and who how they'll be in 5 years (6.0 deja vu)
I guess i would just have to run the numbers again when comes time to replace my X.
I realize that the big three want use to go diesel for our pulling needs and if it comes to that I won't to to a toy diesel in a pickup it will be a proven motor most likely a Cat in a Freightliner M2.
I am just repeating what I read in another thread. I'm not sure if Ford will produce the 6.2L Boss.

I would have to agree with Mark on this point. I hadn't thought of that until he mentioned it again. When I was debating what engine to buy in my SD I ran the numbers and with the new ULSD I didn't want to take the risk on the 6.0L
I guess I am an optimist. When the v10 replaced the 460 I bet a lot of people would've never believed how much better the v10 would be. I trust Ford will do enough homework so that their next gas engine for Superdutys will be a good one.
I will have my 2007 for quite some time but I am not too worried about what's next.
Has anyone read what Ford is doing with these twin turbo direct injected gas motors? The concept sounds awesome.
I'll probably just do what I gotta do to run my V-10 powered SD another year while I am looking hard at what competition is offering in a big block gas motor.
