Oil Leaking from back of heads

7.3 IDI oil has been leaking from rear of both heads for quite some time. I'm just checking availability of parts before I start. Just wondering how hard it will be to lift heads off block and reposition them on my own with no machanical advantage. Any input would be appreciated.

It'll be a challenge with the fenders on, especially if you're alone (dont recomend it though).

You will prolly have to tap the sides with a hammer and a piece of wood.
Be carefull.......They are very heavy. I would recommend having a helper lifting them off.

You may not have to pull the heads. The oil very well be coming coming from around the head bolts heads and running down the bolt then it will wick from under the head gasket. You see this alot on older engines that have alot of hours. All cylinder heads move around on the decks of the block when they are running and oil can work under the head of the bolts. I have seen this for years. You can drain your coolant and pull one bolt at a time. And retorque it. You probably will find a few of the bolts that are oily when you pull them out. That may very well fix it. Most of the area of a head gasket doesn't do anything but hold the fire dams, coolant passage seals and oil pressure a drain port seals wether they be a rubber seal or a bead of silicon, that is printed on the gasket, in place so oil can leak from under from some areas because of the head bolts and that doesn't mean your gasket has failed.

i've heard that the cdr valve stopped up can make rear of head leak oil as well. mine was leaking on the drivers side and i cleaned the cdr valve. should i think about retorking bolts as well?

Thanks for the replies. 150,000 miles on the motor Newer CDR (139). I've heard and read twith these motor if used to pull alot they will lift the heads due to heat coming from exhaust in the last cylinder by the firewall. I've opened up the exhaust a bit but they were leaking before I did that.

Check the valve covers, rear corners of the valley pan for cracks (this is hard due to fact they are under the intake). Also check the oil sender for leakage..... anything seeping onto the valley pan/adapter plate can look like a head gasket problem.

There is no way you will be a One Man Mr Fixit on a head without mechanical advantage and some strong friends.

Checked valve covers a few years ago and again a week ago. All is dry above the seem between the block and head.
I think I've found the answer I was looking for. I will need to call in some muscles.
