I have just replaced my Cam in my 65 352, I have an oil leak on the back drivers side. It is not leaking from the valve covers or intake. It appears to be seeping out through the head gasket, although it is hard to tell because of the location. I do not believe the leak is a result of the cam replacement because I did not touch the heads in the process.
Are you sure it is not the intake? I had a leak on the back and I was sure it was the valve covers and after I put on new gaskets I had the same problem so cleaned the back of the motor with MEK and used a mirror to see where the oil was coming from. It was the intake.
FORDS WILL BE RUNNING LONG AFTER THE GENERAL MOTORS JUNK IS ON THE SCRAPHEAP
on leaks I have found that a small mirror (buy one at autozone or some place) and some engine cleaner help clean your engine, then look for the leak using a VERY bright flashligh (maglight with new batteries works very well) and the mirror you just got. You should have no problem locating the leak this way.
TIP:
Use the Flashlight to point AT the mirror, the light will reflect to what you would be viewing in the mirror thus illuminating what your mirror would be showing you.
Hey, FE engines are notorious for leaking from the intake! The small gaskets slip easily when you try to put that heavy intake on. Once, I replaced an engine using spare intake bolts, and that off-set the intake enough to start it leaking from the right rear. Scared me silly thinking I had a head leak, because I was moving the next week out of state!
Anyway, I have had success by first cleaning the spot well with a gas-soaked rag. Then, I use RTV and force it into the with my finger joints where it mates with the block and head. Last one I did that way still isn't leaking 3 years later! Definitely worth the small effort.
