Well i can verify that it is possible to swap in a 5.4l. It really wasnt to bad of a job, and i have tons of pics trying to show different things... the exaust was the trickiest part... but theres some simple solutions to that...
All i have left is to tune it up with a 5.4l tune. and it will run much better im sure....
I towed 7500 lbs with it today...not to shabby id say... and i know theres more power to be had with it...
Sweet congrats good to hear it wasnt that hard yah post some pics and make a tech article out of it!.. it would seriously help people who are considering that swap 4.6 to 5.4
I was just scouring the sites last week for the same swap ('99 4.6 to '03 5.4) for my truck. I heard the easiest fix for the exhaust problem was to use the 4.6 manifolds turned around and then use the 4.6 senser pick up for them. Is that what you did or did you fab an extension to meet up with the 4.6 collectors? We have almost the same truck and set up. Anything else you can post (when you're not out use'n up tires) would be greatly appreciated. How many miles did you have on your 4.6 and how many miles are on the 5.4? I put a Diablo Predator Sport Tuner on mine just today and instantly felt a good power gain with the prepacked tune. Going to get a Magnaflow catback system tomorrow. Can't wait!
I used the stock 4.6l manifolds and in the correct directions....i just had to split the down tubes apart where the drivers side crosses over to the y pipe..if you crawl under your truck you will see what i mean...theres a factory slip joint there... i did this because i needed to spread them apart to meet up with the wider block of the 5.4l..i had to use the 4.6l throttle body and the tube that connects the throttle body to the intake manifold because of the egr tubes...i might go back and make a new egr tube later and swap the intakes...but i really didnt see any way one was better flowing than the other...hopefully somebody who knows intakes will pipe up and set me straight...
Take the intake manifold off of both motors, and make a special plate like i did that bolts to the spot the intake manifold does...saves a ton of time and scratches...
My 4.6l had 158,000 and ran amazingly... ran with any stock 5.4l from stop light to stop light...just short on torque...The 5.4l had 110-120k on it... i pulled the pan and the cylinders looked perfect.... still great cross hatching on the walls...
I still need to retune my computer... and it will run good i hope... it dont run bad...just not as snappy as id like...
Huge thanks for the info. That make a lot of sense. The mileage it great. I have to agree, I've had my 4.6 pretty much stock since I bought it new in 99 and it has been pretty good. But last week I had to drop down to first while hill climbing with my trailer. Needs more TQ. Maybe gearing also. I think I have the 3.55's. Maybe go to 3.7 or 4.10's. Hate to hear what that costs.
The mileage info is very promising. My motor has 101K and the motor/trans I have my eye on (sitting in my dad's totaled '02 Super Crew) has about 75K.
Milage between the motors are the same...what ever is lost by the bigger engine is gained by it not haveing to work so hard and kick out of O/D on hills...my edge is reporting the same milage to me with both engines...
I got 14.5 towing a 1500lb trailer yesterday, and 12.5 towing 7500 lbs of truck and trailer... not to shabby
Well its hard to say since the engine dosnt have the right tune...but it deffinetatly dosnt feel the same as my dads 01 super crew 5.4l with the 4r100... right now it feels to loose...but well see...the engine isnt makeing optimum power yet...pully pretty darn good though..
Hey Burnsfordtough - just browsing the engine swap subject and was wondering if you'd like to post a little more of a follow up on this subject. Overall are you happy with the swap? was using the coil packs and mainly existing wire harness from the 4.6 a way to go? how did the re tune go? what kind of comparison with power and MPG can you give? thanks!
Actually im still waiting on the retune... my guy has got the chassie dyno in but the factory reflash program that he bought isnt there yet... its been forever...lol...
Right now the truck will deff pull better than my 4.6l, but its not near as quick or responsive... but i know as soon as i get the tune on it... there will be no comparison...
Using the coil packs is the way to go i think....much cheaper if thats what you already have.... if you have a 4.6l with cop's use that.... reason is that if you want to go from one ignition system to the other, you have to change the complete engine harness to the fire wall... and the harness that goes from the firewall to the computer, and the computer... becasuse of the difference in pin location.
MGP is the same right now, might be a bit better after i regain some ponys back from the tune job... hopefully only a couple more weeks...
So all in all im happy with the swap but still waiting on the retune... ford will not do it for you... unless you have a friend...maybe... ford is dumb, i had to reflash my dads supercrew, and when the tech guy was done i offered the him money to hook up to my truck and re download the same thing he put on my dads screw and he wouldnt...
