I apolijise up front, but search seems to be disabled for me and I have a problem. I thought I had a brake squeel so I cleaned the brakes out really good and the squeek persisted causing me to think it may be a wheel bearing or a broken spring in the brake caliber. It is a chiiiiirrrrppppp Chirrrrppppp for about 1/4 wheel turn and only when the wheel turns. I will also check the universals, but it is not that fast.
I have never had the wheelbearings out of the truck. I asume it is similar to any other full float 60 I have worked on but before i take it apart is there anything to be aware of? Any specific procedure required to service these bearings?
My bad, I read my post again and I didn't specify it is the rear end where the noise is. Sorry bout that.... May not change anything,,, Dang unit bearings are outragously priced, and the non servicable part is unfortunate aswell. The design on the jeep wranglers is similar but smaller. I know from dealing with them that you don't want to buy cheap ones.
It is rare for the rear bearings to go bad. It is a sterling 10.5 unit. You need a special socket to remove the lock for the bearing, and the seal on the back usually gets destroyed because it is a submerged seal. Gear oil lubes the rear wheel bearings so if they are "squeeking" something is really wrong. My guess is the brakes are causing your issue and you need to check into them further.
The Striling 10.5 is a full float (I think) and it is tougher than a 60 so don't be disappointed. I have never heard of a rear wheel bearing going on any of these trucks and I have more than a few. If the bearing has got a problem than it should be leaking rear end gear oil out the end. If its not leaking oil, I would look for the problem in the brakes.
I am betting brakes now, I can change the noise and actually eliminate it with application of the brakes.
I was under it tonight and looked at the carrier bearing for the drive shaft. Is there a way to grease that thing? I couldn't find a zerk on it. All u joints are in good shape. I did find what appears to be a rear main seal leak, or maybee a valve cover leak, I can't quite track it down. As much as it cost to put iol in this thing I can't afford to have it leaking out.
Thakns for the replies, It is nice to talk to folks who know the vehicle.
