I have a battery light that just started flickering in the last week. I have a real voltmeter hooked up, and i have not seen any drop in the readings, stays between 13.6 - 14.2, usually runs right around 14... the light flickers when i start to get rpms up around 2k, and seems to come on steadier over 2k rpm... i have seen alternator codes in the past, but i have never seen this idiot light come on.... Do you think i have an alternator going bad, or do i have a short somewhere..? My mule is closing in on 120k miles, and i'm almost positive this is the original alternator. Also, do not think i have the dual alternator setup. Thanks for your opinions guys, i'm sure you'll point me to where i should look first.
If you got the volts, check amps then I would say its a diode bleeding back through and putting some AC on the Dc, this can be checked as well by using the AC scale on the VOM..
There was another thread going with alternator problems here the last few days, somebody was saying something about a 6 g alt. I dont think the price was much more but they had some that went up to 200 amps.

what is the rating of the stock unit..? do i need that kind of power..? i don't have much for extras, electrically speaking that is... i have been thinking about adding some extra candles on the front and rear so i can see better when i'm plowing snow... maybe a few extra amps wouldn't hurt...
When my batt light flickered it was just a bad conection at the alternator. But after 100K miles, it is probably time for a new one. Carquest has them for $120 lifetime warrenty.<!-- KEN: 1-13-2007: show 300x250 ad-block to non-Club FTE users in the 1st post of every page --><!-- / Ken, end of hack --><!-- / message --><!-- no sigs except when logged in --><!-- sig --><!-- KEN: 1-13-2007: show 300x250 ad-block to non-Club FTE users in the 1st post of every page --><!-- / Ken, end of hack --><!-- / message --><!-- no sigs except when logged in --><!-- sig -->
I just changed out my alternator about 4 days ago. I drove about 200 miles and now the battery light is flickering a little bit and the guage is moving higher than normal and then back to normal. Any ideas?
