well i finally got around to starting my engine rebuild for my 65 Mercury M100.
after 3 years of sitting with the engine pulled i asked my local auto parts store how much to bore the 300ci six block, $100! within an hour the block and KB-silvolite +.040 pistons. i still need to find a cam, intake and valvetrain systems. the truck is set up with a 5 lug dana 60 with 4:11 posi (stock config farm truck)
i am also wondering about a good transmission option, the stock 4speed stick is pretty sloppy.
my big questions are:
Cam: whats the best option for a daily driver with good sound/grunt. (wont be hauling much, can use my dads 91 F250 460 for that)
Carb: a non Holley 4bbl to go with headers, Speed Demon 575 mech or other small carb.
intake: most likely the old Offy 4bbl.
Transmission: rebuild the stock T-18, change to street/strip C6 auto or go M5R2 OD trans from 90's F150?
Rear end: leave 4:11 posi Dana 60, rebuild rear with more street friendly ratio or go 9inch from pre 72 F100?

Melling Torque Cam
Holley 450 Economaster (7565 i believe is the correct part #)
Offenhauser D/P (for torque & economy)
Crane Gold Race Roller Rockers
Over-size Valves & H.D. Springs
C-4 w/ a Splitter
Holley 4360 Economaster PN 8002 works great on mine. You will run across several different PN's for the Model 4360...they were built by Holley as a less expensive replacement for the Q-Jet and work well on small cid engines up to 350's. It is a spread bore and will require an adapter to the Offy 4 bore manifold. Trans Dapt #2034 or Edelbrock #2696 flipped over works. If Holley is out a Carter 500 cfm used on 273's and 318's should work quite nicely or an Edelbrock 500 cfm.
I'm running the Comp 260h cam and lifter kit with stock rockers and I like it quite well. Super smooth idle and low to mid-range running with more than enough top end for me. If you want "lump n blurb" you can have it with a bigger cam but street driveability suffers at lower rpms.

What about a Edelbrock 600 cfm? A little more intake volume available...
More intake volume available but not necessarily useable unless spinning at high rpm's.
A vac secondary carb is probably best for street use regardless of whether it's 450, 500, 600 cfm etc. One can't force feed an engine and get satisfactory driveability with WOT mechanical secondaries at low to mid rpm's.

Ummm, I have a 94 with injection. I was curious as I used a 600 cfm on my 5.0 Capri years ago. And yes it was vacuum secondaries. Thanks, I was exercising my brain and got you caught in the middle. IMHO, the Holley is the best for the buck. But to each their own...
Yes, it is a matter of preference. I happen to like the spread bore concept...small primaries for economy and driveability and the larger secondaries when I want to indulge in the kick. Holley or Edelbrock or Demon or QJet...whatever suits your fancy is fine. It would be dull and boring if we didn't have choices.
