Temp Gauge install

On my 97 PSD my temp coolant sensor is just to the left of the thermostat when facing engine from front. Is that where I will screw in my new temp sensor/sender thing?

you can but then you'll have a dead gauge and i hate that, if it were mine i would put it in a different place, i think there's another plug in the water pump housing if memory serves me right

Yes there is another plug in the water pump that would be a better place to put it.

TN, since I was just there for about 6 hours yesterday, if you look to the right and lower of the T-stat housing, the long neck, there is a square plug just below your T-stat. It is on the side of the belly of the the T-stat housing, on the water pump side, not the neck.

TN, I think that he is talking about the same plug. It is the sensible spot for the sending unit as it is will give you the graduation of temps up to the point of the t-stat opening, then the steady temp.

You are going to have to drain your coolant down a gallon or so, like you did when you replaced your T-stat, unless you are real quick with the sending unit.

Thats not a problem, I just went ahead and drained what was left. I lost more than half with the heater hose leak anyway. Did you see my heater hose T pic I made?

I looked at the other port and of course it's very hard to get a tool in there because of the belt/pulleys. It's also rusted and takes a 1/4 drive to remove, which I have already broken off in one of the stupid drain plugs that required the same. I might just go where the stock one is and just have a dead gauge. If the stock gauge is junk anyway then does it really matter?

I guess if you dont mind having a non-functioning gauge in your dash that would be OK. It would drive me crazy to no end, but that is just me.

This gauge I got is going to require a diameter hole in the firewall about the size of a nickel! Does that seem right? The sensor is supposed to be threaded through firewall to it's location and on the sensor is a ready to thread nut into whichever adapter fits into the port. How the heck do I drill a hole that big? Also, the gauge came with no rubber thing that you would put in the hole you drill through the firewall. It doesn't seem that it will be very air tight where it goes through the firewall.

You just need to reseal the hole with silicone. Does the sending unit come off the end of the sending wire? You should be able to separate the two so that you just need a small hole through the firewall. I will go outside and look at my truck and see if I can offer any suggestions as to where to go with it.

There is a pre-existing spot just to the left of your Vacuum Boost that all of my gauge connections are fed through. It is a rubber panel spot that you can go through and then reseal it with silicone.

Bear with me please. When facing truck from front exactly where is it? This sounds really good if I can just find it.

If you look at the truck from the front. Look to your right side. Find the brake master cylinder, then behind it is the BIG black round canister(vacuum boost). Just to the left side of the big black canister is the firewall rubber port. You can go through that and reseal it with silicone.
