Have you seen one?Man,if there was a perfect commercial, one of theirs would be it!Kind of a subliminal message to treat others nice.Like the guy who holds the elevator door for a stranger.Or the guy who stops to help somebody who has tripped and fallen.Man,I like their commercials.I try to live this way.If I see an older person struggling to get their groceries to the car,I help.Of course it helps that I am wearing a fire department t-shirt at the time,so they dont get scared that some nut is going to rob them.Or just simple things like holding a door for somebody,or saying good morning and smiling. So,what better way to teach the young people today, how to be kind to other people.By example.I once saw an older woman on the other side of a divided highway, broke down with a flat tire.I made a u-turn in the median and pulled up behind her,got out,let her see who I was(fireman)and proceeded to change her tire for her.She tried to hand me $20 when I was done, but I wouldnt take it.She told me I had made her day.Boy,what a great feeling I had as I pulled away!
It's a good commercial, but Liberty Mutual is the worst insurance company I ever dealt with and that includes my time with Allstate (the second worst). LM sent my account to collections when I cancelled my service with them. I sold the car that I had the insurance on, cancelled my policy, then a couple months later got a letter from a collection agency asking for LM's money. If anything they owed me money for overpaying my premium.
ironic that theres a post about LM. I'm opening my mail as Im surfin fte and I got some sort of offer from my college's alumni assoc. to get insureance through LM.....
Gee OKMIC1 that sucks! But then if you ask me,all insurance companies suck. Some just worse than others. But then that is a whole different subject, and I dont want to hi-jack my own thread talking about how the insurance industry bought our government into making it a law where I HAVE to have insurance that does absolutely nothing for me if I get in a wreck (no-fault).Or,how I have paid, and paid, and paid for insurance and never had to use it,so at the end of the year, what do I have to show for all that money I spent?Nothing!
I try to teach my kids to help people when possible, but I also teach them to use common sense to evaluate the situation. We went back and changed a girl's tire the other day. Doing the right thing should be a natural behavior, but we also have to consider if it's safe to help, like if traffic is likely to hit you while you're working on their car or if the person looks like an axe murderer.
Quite frankly I don't stop and help as much as I used to. People have been mugged when they stopped or if a guy helping a woman has been accused of attempted rape or the like. Used to be I didn't think twice about it especially if it was a woman, but now if I have my family with me I usually don't. If by myself I will stop but I won't get in the car with a woman or let her get in the car with me. I also take a look around to make sure someone isn't waiting for me to stop. Sucks big time.
I signed on with Allstate in 1984 when I bought my VW Rabbit ~ Have had the same policy ever since. Two years ago, my son (17) totalled my F-250, and when we added a replacement truck (F-150) to my policy, the rate went down $50.00 a month. Two years later ~now~ I add my 17-year-old daughter and my rate increase was $30.00! I have full coverage on my Super Duty and liability on the F150, Taurus and Rabbit for $180.00 a month ~ That's two teenagers! I've gone to other companies for rate quotes and they can't even come close!
As far as those comercials ~ They are great! I was watching one this morning and a lady grabbed the other end of a rolled up carpet an elderly woman was carrying. I thought, in the real world, she may start screaming that someone was robbing her of her rug! Those commercials depict how the world once was ~ and it would be really nice to see it that way again! Maybe in time...
Yeah, I do like those commercials. If nothing else it shows a definite trend towards the older values. We got a new priest at our church here a couple weeks ago and he made a good point in his first homily. The youth of today wants to go back to the 50s style values, they've seen first hand (through their parents) what turning away from them has done. So we have an insurgence of youth in the churches these days looking for answers.
I once had the opportunity to help a guy push his car out of the road. He was on the opposite side of the road, but I could've stopped and helped... I didn't. It would have taken my step-son and me about a minute to do it and I didn't. I actually felt guilty about that for the rest of the day. I won't let an opportunity like that pass again. We helped another guy push his car out of a flooded street. Poor guy was trying to drive through 18 inches of water in a Camaro!
KT, you may not have gotten any financial gain from helping that woman, but you certainly enjoyed the feeling that it gave you, right? That's the payment you received-a great feeling, knowing you made somebody's day.
