Question 03' Expy ABS sensor - same as 00'?

I have an 03' 5.4L 2WD EB. Is the location of the ABS sensor in the same place as everyone else's? I've done a search on the ABS sensor and everyone says theirs is on the top of the pumpkin, if I gather all that correctly. I was under my car for about an hr this afternoon. I've felt all around on top of that rear diff and I can't seem to feel anything that looks like the sensor I just picked up from Autozone would feel. I dont' even see any wires going near there. I'll include some pics. Can anyone point out to me about where I should find it? Will I be able to see it from under the car? or will I have to just feel for it?

Thanks in advance everyone...

RX

On my '00 it was very obvious and easy to locate. If you don't see it, on top of the differential, while under the vehicle then it might be elsewhere on the '03+ Expys. Hopefully someone who's replaced one will come along.

Umm, those are pics of the bottom of the pumkin, you need to get under there and look on top of it. if its there on the 03+ (and i do not know if it is) it should pretty much be top dead center on the pumkin.

Well, Ill be...

I checked the 2003 Expy/Nav service manual and the rear ABS sensor is NOT on the top of the pumpkin!

Evidently, Ford put an individual sensor on EACH rear wheel hub for these trucks.

I'll have to advise you that screwing with this without a proper scan is likely futile. That means a trip to a shop or a dealer.

Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news.

Ha.. it's not so bad news. i've already been to the dealer. They're the one that told me it was the rear abs sensor. So there's one for each wheel hub. Hmm.. I bought the sensor I have from the dealer and they only sold me 1. They made no mention to there being more than one. I bet the guy just assumed it was the same as previous years. Thanks Steve. I'll head back to the dealer tomorrow or the day after and request the correct ones.

The dealer person was just guessing based on previous common failures of the rear diff sensor on so many other F-series platforms. You don't have that version of the system.

You're wasting your time and money dinking with it without getting a scan.

Get the scan so,at least, you can dink with the correct part of the system.

I paid the dealer $80 to have them diag the problem and thats what they came up with.. (rear abs sensor).. I'm assuming they ran it thru a scanner. .. no?

Well, we would certainly hope so since you paid for it.

However, it appears that the information they gave you was incomplete, at best. Since we don't have access to the actual fault codes or any details of the troubleshooting process (if any) that was performed, we have insufficient information to do anything other than guess.

IMHO, that's a tough way to diagnose and repair a fault in a complex system.

i understand.. Steve.. Thank you for your help. I guess all i can do right now is cross my fingers and see if the ABS light goes out. If not, I guess I'll have to take it back to ford and actually request them to do the scan and request the codes as well.

RX

again... thank you for your help. I dont know where I'd be without this place

shouldn't I just change them both out at the same time? They're cheap enough and from the sound of it, they're easy enough to get to...
