header conversion?

I have been looking for a free flowing exhaust and the prices are down right scary (I did look at Stan's Headers). It seems anything Diesel is twice the price.
Anyway my question is could a set of headers for a big block (460) be tweaked to fit a 6.9IDI diesel? I was thinking BB due to the large diameter primary tubes and 460 because it was an OEM option so the outlet would be close to where it needs to be. They can be bought cheep and maybe make a new flange using a gasket as a template.

Anyone try it yet? How different is the exhaust port configuration?

The headers on the pass side are a very tight fit, so they would need to look a lot like the ones at Stans to fit!

Right, but a 460 isn't tiny either so I figured a set of headers for say a F350 truck would be close, may need a little heating and bending, but should be close.
I'm not sure about the exhaust ports though, concerned about the spacing and size.

That would be my primary concern. I guess you could get your hands on an exhaust manifold gasket from each and compare them....

I was thinking the same thing, That would give me the port size and spacing but not the angle of the head, I am also afraid of the header being too close and or hitting the block.
I would love a set of Stan's but they are a little pricey for me and I really don't want the "polished" look.
PS. I am also trying to get my 20 post's so I can put a signature on :-)

If you can get a 3" pipe right up to your stock headers, then Y into a 4 inch system you will gain as much benifit or darn near as much as the headers will give you. That and a good ram air inlet will get you enough air to turn up the fuel some.

Not that I doubt you but aren't the stock exhaust manifolds restrictive? You may be on to something, if I go from the manifolds to a "Y" how big of a tube? will 3" be enough forward of the "Y" them 4" to the rear or will 3" to the rear be enough?
You seem to be the header guru around here ( I have read your posts )

I was originally looking at a 3" system with a free flowing muffler that I can pick up retail for around a hundred bucks for a turbo ( I have a N\A ) that I was going to modify to fit But I will hunt down a 4" if necessary.

Only 1 problem with that plan. 2-1/2" is the biggest thing that will fit inside the stock collar that bolts the pipe to the flange - and even that requires boring them out some, IIRC. Besides, the manifold side of that connection is only 2-1/4" diameter (same as the stock pipe).

If you have the fab skills to modify headers you can easily build yourself a true Y-pipe (the stock one is more of a T-pipe) like the one I made for mine. It did WONDERS for how mine exhales....

Well I did a little quick research and found another issue, the diesel ports are round and the 460 ports are oval.
I could go 2 1/2' from the exhaust manifolds to a "Y" and neck it up to 3" or 4" at the "Y" but would it be worth it? Would the 2 1/2" with the stock manifolds be to restrictive to be worth the effort?

I think I will try the "Y" pipe modification, or Napa sells one for about $135 that is less of a "T" pipe (part #EXH40556)
Thanks for all of your help and insite, I will post with any good information (mileage etc)

Would there be any advantage to twin turbos on a 7.3 L? My exhaust is fine, yet I just want a reason to bolt up this other turbo. I do not want to do it if it won't gain any power.

The reason twin turbo's are used is so that 2 different sizes can be employed, a smaller turbo spools up faster and gives low end and a big turbo spools slower but makes top end power and more boost. I don't think that a second turbo is called for on a older IDI diesel so you should just sell it to me......cheaply of course. :-)

Nice try... I have thought there was not enough rpm range for two turbos. Alas, I have another engine that is begging for more air and the turbo will get some use... Thanks for the confirmation.

an intercooler would help, it would lower EGT's and allow you to get more boost from the turbo that you have.

Headers for a 460 just plain won't work for an IDI, port spacing, shape and size is different(IDI is bigger on all counts) An idi is also wider than a 460(An IDI generally makes a 460 look small.) With how tight the pass side headers on my 460 are to the frame, I'd love to see a set of Stans headers installed on an IDI truck.

I've got a parallel twin setup for my 6.9 on the back burner... I plan on a nice 20 psi system that will have useable boost by 1000 rpm....
