I have 97 f150 4.6/4x4 with 112,000 on it. I experienced rough idle and some hesitation at 110,000. I replaced plugs and wires. I used Bosch Platinum 2s. I hope they last after reading threads saying they are terrible. I replaced the wires with Ford Motorsport 9MM wires. I bought the wires online from yahoo sight "Racing Superstore" for about $78.00 plus shipping. Smooth idle now and more throttle response.
I had the same problem. Replaced plugs and plug wires with original equipment (Motorcraft platinum plugs and wires), also used fuel injector cleaner and this took care of it. They also suggested cleaning the throttle body, which I passed on. All of this cost about $300(the Motorcraft plug wires are $150 just for the part) but Ford wanted almost $800 - they're shameless.
I had the mis-fire during acceleraton problem suddenly start this week. General thought was that the fuel filter is dirty. Oh well, I read that it supposed to be changed annually. I have the line depressurized, and am trying to disconnect the filter.
I bought a tool to do this, but I can't seem to get it to work. I can slide it in the disconnect, but cant get the disconnect to disconnect off the filter. I was pushing pretty hard, but I sure do not want to break it off
I would appreciate your suggestions.
Some of those aftermarket tools are pretty crappy. Sometimes the clips are just plain stubborn because they fill up with dirt. Try pushing the fitting in as far as it will go into the filter pipe and twist the tool around the circumference of the fitting to get all the fingers of the retainer clip popped loose. Then work it off. Sometimes they are a real pain in the rump. Sometimes the problem is someone put on the wrong filter too. Ive had to go as far as cutting the filter pipes off and working out the fitting with the filter out of the picture.
Homer, thanks for the advice. Seeing as how this is the origional factory filter (108,000 miles), I suppose that I can't complain. Looks like the problem is the #2 cylinder missfire problem that I have read about (P0302).
