Drop a mild 460 in and you should be happy. Or go with a 351w, I always mention this since I learned about it. You can get a 3.85" stroke crank from summit $500 use 302 piston and bore it out 30 use stoke rods add a nice intake, cam, card, ignition along with some port work on stock heads and you should be near 400hp with alot of torque. Not too expensive either since these are not radical mods in theory it should be dependable. Check out the site below they use aluminum heads but I have heard people using stock heads with mild port work getting near 400hp with this setup. you may need to copy and paste the address below to view it:

Good luck hope everything works out

real nice with 460 and automatic overdrive!! if you don't want that much, I had a 351w with c6 in a 54 f100.
if I had it to do again(which I will) I would get an overdrive. it really reduces noise and fuel use. alos watch what rear gears you run. they can make a big difference in driveability.

Use a 400 with a C6. With flattop pistons you can get the compression ratio to 9:1. A little work on the heads with 351C-4V valves and hardened seats, a decent cam, zero degree double roller chain, Edelbrock Intake and Carb will get you close to 400 HP with tons of torque.

Mine has 351C-4V heads and 10.3:1 CR and is good for about 430 HP.
