It is located under the kick panel on the passenger side. It shouldn't take any special
tools. disconnect the battery before unplugging it or reconnecting it. It must be
replaced only with a similar computer: same year, same emission setup, same engine,
same transmission. Be sure to check codes beforehand to make sure that is what you
need to do. That could be a bit expensive if another fault is causing your problem.
Take a look at the "read first" portion of this forum. It has the codes and a cheap way
to get them. Also the Haynes repair manual lists several codes for transmission
function.
In the FWIW category, the main thing to look for in a junkyard swap is auto to auto and manual to manual. 1986-1987 and 1988-90 might be advisable too.
I found a computer from a 88 mine is an 86 they look similar..i got it for $12 so i'm maybe gonna take a chance...anything i should do b4 puttin this one in???
The 88 computer may not work, as the '88-up models didn't have the EGR setup, if I remember right. When you pulled the '88 computer, you should have taken note on the wiring and wire colors in reference to the connector to see if things match up... not to say they'd be totally different, but Ford tends to change their wiring configurations year to year...
well i swapped computers and still no overdrive..every thing else works but the over drive so i guess its not the computer..tranny is recently rebuilt..don't know what else to check unless maybe the solenoid if i can find it
Not that I am aware of off the top of my head. Sounds like the solenoid(s) that drive(s) your overdrive are faulty or there may be a wire connector not connected on the transmission. I would also swap your original computer back in just to make sure everything is 'original configuration' regardless of what you find (bad solenoid(s) or disconnected / bad wiring).
