HELP just finished rebuild big problem

So i finaly finished rebuilding my b2, and when I started the engine i heard running water, which prompted me to immediatly shut the engine off, it didn't run for more than 10 seconds. However a massive amount of fluid was leaking out from the bell housing it seems like some kind of mix of water and oil. So i think it is either engine oil with coolant in it, or gear oil from the transmision with water in it.

If anyone has any advice i would really appriciate it.

Thanks

Try pressurizing tne cooling system with a radiator pressure tester. If the liquid leaks out, the problem is very likely with the engine, if not the problem is something else.

drained engine oil today, there was coolant in it. I was also only able to drain 2 qt, even though i put in 5 qt so that means that most of it probably leaked out when i first started up, and the rest is in the oil pump the oil filter and probably up on the heads. My best guess is that my intake manifold gasget is the source of the leak. Yes I have checked the freeze plugs are all in, so the only thing i can figure is that the coolant oil mixture was able to pass out the rear main seal rather easily.

What are my options to get all the coolant out of the engine with out haveing to take the entire thing apart, and does the intake manifold gasket sound like a good guess as to the source of the leak.

Sounds like the intake gasket. The only other possibility are the head gaskets or cracked heads / block if everything was torqued down / installed properly.

ok so i have broke down the top portion of the engine, and have discovered that it is definatly the intake manifold gasket however i now need to figure out a way to make sure all the coolant is out of things like the oil pump is there any way to do this with out haveing to take the oil pan off.

I would just put the engine back together properly then run some oil cleaner with some cheap oil in there and after you get the engine tuned and running well. Drain it and put in fresh oil. Goodluck!

You can probably put it all back together and then fill up all the fluids and get it run-in a little, but I would suggest flushing the crankcase/oil pump/lubrication system by running it up, shutting it down and draining the oil and changing the oil and filter several times until you don't see any traces of water/coolant in the oil. The amount of time the engine ran with the intake gasket like it was shouldn't have caused a major catastrophe. Not sure if you can pull the distributor with the upper and/or lower intake removed and run the oil pump manually with the pan on to cycle the water out completely, but that is also a thought.... but you'd need a way to 'recycle' the oil through the system or pull the 'dirty' oil out and replenish with 'clean' oil. It wouldn't hurt whichever process you use to use some cheap 30W oil and cheap oil filters, though. It would REALLY suck if you decided to go straight to full synthetic on rebuild, though. You may want to consider after getting the water out to go synthetic, though. That's what I plan on doing when I either rebuild the 2.9 or do a possible 4.0 swap. Anyhow... hope this helps give some more insight.
