Talking ODO Display - Learned Something New Today

Many of you may already know this, but I just learned a new trick with the ODO display - you can display the realtime digital information from many things - most notably, Temp, Speed, RPM, and many many others.

There seems to be a slight difference in the way to enter based on model year. I have an 06. With the key OFF, press & hold the Trip/Reset button. Turn the ON position (not started). When the word 'TEST' comes up, release the button and start the engine. By pressing the Trip/Reset button you can cycle through all the things that can be displayed. I have read (have not verified) that on older models, follow the same procedure but instead of the 'TEST' coming on, the gauges will swing to full scale then back. Release the button at that time.

My question is: Does anyone have a list of what all these various items are? Some of the titles are cryptic. As an example there is a 'C TEMP', that I assume is Coolant Temp (appears to be in deg C). There is also a 'OIL' that on mine stays at 000, what is this?? There are many other items, try it if you never have.

I did not know this. Is it in the Owners Manual? I am going to try it on my truck tonight.

I can only tell you how it worked on my 06. Should be the same or at least close. Hold down the Trip/Rest button, then turn the key to the ON position. After a few seconds, the word 'TEST' showed up in the ODO display. When it shows, release the button and start the engine without turning the key to OFF.

Well I tried again and it did not work. I even handed the printed instructions to some coworkers to try and they failed as well . Maybe it is different on an 07 . If anyone has any ideas let me know.

I have a 2003 model year truck and it works on it.

This has/was originally discussed back in 2004 when it was first learned.

Here is a cut & paste I have from back then (I save it as a Word document).

ODOMETER TRICK TO SEE COMPUTER VALUES AND GAUGE READOUTS

Put your key in the ignition and leave in the off position. Hold your trip button on the speedometer to the reset position and hold there. Turn the key on but do not start yet. When all you gauges sweep release the trip button. Now you are in "digital" mode on the mileage odometer. You can start your truck and you can press the trip button to get different readings such as a digital tac. It can show you various sensor readings.

Kinda interesting.... to reset the digital stuff just turn the truck off and restart and you will back to showing the mileage.

I don't know/understand some of the diesel code(s)etc. but we have used many times on our Lightning.

__________________________________________________ _______________

Here's the odometer function followed by a description.

GAGE - Carries out gauge sweep of all gauges, then displays the present gauge values. Also carries out the check sum test on ROM and EEPROM.

All segments illuminated.
Illuminates all odometer segments.

bulb
Illuminates all micro-controlled lamps and LEDs.

r ####
Returns to normal operation of all micro-controlled lamps and LEDs and displays hexadecimal value for ROM level (used when requesting assistance from the hotline).

nr####
Displays hexidecimal ROM level and type as stored in non-volatile memory (NVM).

EE ##
Displays hexadecimal value for EE level (used when requesting assistance from the hotline).

dt ####
Displays hexadecimal code for the final manufacturing date.

###C
Gas engines display last temperature gauge input value from SCP, temperature gauge will indicate present temperature. Diesel engine displays present temperature analog/digital input in decimal as a ratio, temperature gauge will indicate present temperature.

dtc ####
Displays a 16 bit DTC in hexidecimal format. DTCs displayed are those detected in continuous operation not during self-test.

EnG
Displays English speed value being input, speedometer will indicate present speed.

m
Displays metric speed value being input, speedometer will indicate present speed.
tAc Displays the tachometer value being input to the instrument cluster. Tachometer will indicate present rpm.

FUEL
Displays the present analog/digital fuel level being input to the instrument cluster as a ratio.

OIL
Displays the last analog/digital reading of the oil pressure switch contact resistance, oil gauge will indicate present level.

br
Displays the brake fluid level in an analog/digital ratio value.

bAt ##.#
Displays present battery analog/digital voltage.

rhEo
Displays present hexadecimal pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming input.

rhi, rhS, rho
Alternating 1 second display of pulse width modulation (PWM) input duty cycle, SCP hexidecimal dimming step, output driver counts in hexadecimal.

Cr
RUN/START sense circuit check.

PA, Pb, PC, and Pd
Displays 8-bit hexadecimal value for the Port A, B, C, and D readings (used when requesting information from the hotline).

PE0-PE7
Displays 8-bit hexadecimal value for the Port E0-Port E7 in analog/digital readings
--------------------------------------------

Hope this answers your question as to what it all means?

Have fun!!!!

Jeff

Thanks I had found that also. In the later models (like my 06) there are many more and some different items. Some are self explanatory and others you can assume are the same as above with a slightly different title. But there are others as well. Anyone know of a newer list of values??

Thats is the problem. My 07 has 3 buttons on the dash behind the gear shifter. It does not have a trip/reset button on the speedometer. I was pressing and holding down the button on the far right that says "RESET" as this button resets trip log, avg. economy etc. I then would follow instructions and to no avail.

Maybe a dumb thing to ask, but maybe try the other buttons?? The single button on mine takes the ODO to Trip, Engine Hours, etc. Maybe it is just labeled different on the 07's???

I just looked up the difference in the dash, appears to not be a difference with the year but option package. From the descriptions, I would guess that it is the INFO button on yours. Just a guess on my part, but worth a try.

I have an 05 with the 3 buttons (Info, Setup, Reset)

You have to hold the Setup and Reset buttons at the same time, then turn key to on - you will see TEST and as soon as you do, let off the buttons and then start the truck - press reset to cycle thru all the options...

Many Thanks!!

Thanks, superv10! That clarified things. I think the package with the 3 buttons info/setup/reset is a Lariat and King Ranch package thing.

Thanks again,

FordGuy

2 Line ODO - More Data

There also appears to have been a change when the went from the 1 line to 2 line Odometer display. Below are all the items that list on my truck (2 line display). I have added the descriptions, based on the previous information where it seems to fit. A few are still unknown. Specifically, the item listed as OIL, shows as all zeros (000) in my display. So if this is pressure as was previously, boy does that worry me (though my pressure gauges shows good). The numeric entry (on mine 001624), I don't know what that means or if it will be different with a different truck.

When you guys check yours, update this list below and lets see if we can put together a complete outline that can then be sticky'ed to a tech folder.
