The contact tabs on the motor that signal the start and end of the cycle are probably bent or worn out. On the wiper motor, there should be a little plate on the gearcase that has three or four screws holding it on, and a couple wires going to it- pull this plate, and make sure the tabs are making good contact with the brass strips on the gear. On my Subaru, they were all bent up and the wipers would just run in the intermittent position, and stop wherever I shut the switch off at.
If those tabs are ok, the next shot would be the intermittent relay, but if it's the old mechanical one (looks like a flasher), then it'll be cheaper to build a solid state replacement.

It was very simple too! I just flipped the lever to the off position.
