I loaned my 02 PSD to my kid to pu some stuff from his mom's house, and he wasn't gone 5 minutes and he called me on his cell and said "why won't this thing do over 80?". It's true. At 80 mph it starts bucking and won't go any faster. Up to then it's a real haul A machine. It never even misses or hesitates.
I run an Edge Evo II and have it under program 1 "tow" cause I haul a 15K trailer around. Don't need to do 80 with it. Does Edge have some sort of govenor on the tow program that you are aware of? RPM doesn't seem to be a factor since I am no where near the red-line at 80 in 4th.
I was thinking that it might. I know you can change that if you go into the custom tunes. I was thinking of getting one so I read the manual online. fwiw
Sounds like a governor setting of some kind. Or your fuel pump can't keep up. Has your filter been changed lately? Could also be crud in the pickup (in the tank), or the pump itself, but it is a bit strange that it's more speed related... However, our "Bricks" going 80 puts enough of an extra load on the truck that it could be calling for more fuel that it can't get, as opposed to going say, 40 in a lower gear. Something to think about.
Well I did find in the Edge "customization" instructions, a way to adjust the top speed. It said that top speed was set by the factory and go higher at your own risk. Sounds like on the 02 it does have a govenor. A friend with a 96 PSD has gone faster in his without problems so it doesn't appear to be part of the programing then. I will go in and up the "raise" the speed and see if it will go faster. I don't really have need to, but I just want to make sure there is nothing wrong with the engine.
The stock truck governs at ~95mph. Why Edge would set it to 80 is beyond me. I've had my truck over 100 (with the DP Tuner), but I have to rely on the GPS for speeds because the speedo drops to zero when you get over 100.
It'll go above 90 when reflashed to stock on the EVO II. I guess they figure i don't need to go over 80 "towing". But if i wanted, i could custom the towing flash to increase the speed above 80.
Thanks for the interest but I don't drive the rig as much as I would like to. With fuel prices about $310 a gallon now here, and my garage won't hold the Crew Cab, I have it covered up in the driveway on the side of the house. But I don't think the rpm's were much over mid-2K and when i flashed back to stock, it went to 90 no problem. When I get to driving it again, I will double check, but I am convinced the speed is governed to 80 in the #1 ("tow") mode.
It's a very good practice to not even go as fast as 80 mph when towing. I think I saw that in general LT tires have a speed rating of only 87 mph, and Michelin recommends 75 mph for hot weather, full load towing, for the 235 85 R 16 XPS RIB all steel tires that I have on my trailer. If you're interested in an RPM vs MPH table for 3.73 & 4.10 diff ratios, I just posted one here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/635841-4-10-rear-end-swap.html

You're welcome Gary.
Done some research here since we are Edge Dealers and this is a good question you have. It is very well possible that the speed limiter is falling below the stock factory setting when options within the unit are changed. I would contact edge and let them know what you are experiencing. It's the only way they can fix it.
