Fuel will leak from the lines that are disconnected. I remember it was not a stream, just a steady drip. After the fact, I hear that a schrader valve is located on the engine top side that you depress and that will relieve the remaining line pressure to stop the lines from dripping. After reassembly I simply turned the key on/off a few times to fill the HCFM and purge what air I had in the system. When I fired the engine it only sputtered for a second.
Hopefully a tech will chime in and tell us were the valve is. Mike Kelly
Mike, I suppose you could tape the lines closed or at least slow the drip while you score and unscrew the old drain plug. I've tried everything including having it to a shop who took the driveshaft off and still couldn't get the plug out. Every time I go around a left hand turn my water in fuel light briefly flashes on. I have the new plug but it's like going into a burger joint hungry with no money! Man, I gotta get this fixed.
I made a drain valve about a year and a half ago that requires no wrench. I got tired of the fuel mess. Here is what I did. I drilled and tapped the original drain plug for 1/8th pipe threads, installed a 1/8th pipe M/F 90° elbow in the drain plug, installed a 2" long brass pipe into the elbow, attached a brass coupling and then inserted a drain valve in the coupling. Now I just reach under the X and open the drain. I catch the fuel in a container for water analysis and close the drain. Fuel never touches my hands and I don't even have to crawl under the X to do this. I tried to post pics but was not allowed. If someone who can post pics can send me a PM with an email address, I'll send them the pics so they can post them. The whole thing cost me about $10. The only problems I can see is you have to be carefull when putting the vehicle on a lift and off roading. I have been looking for a small drain valve that will just screw right into the original drilled and tapped plug. I have seen them but can't seem to put my hands on one.
I went to the local Ford garage (I found out that they have a pretty good diesel tech now) and talked to the tech. He said that the warranty does not cover chewed up HCFM drain plug even though it stinks to begin with. He also informed for about 68 dollars or so they could order the cover to the drain module. The cover apparently isn't too big of a job to change. I'm going to order it and switch prior to going on a dirt bike trip over Labor Day weekend. I'll let you know how it went.
