Is a lifter pump or pre-pump pump required or reccomended when doing the intank mods. I think most of you who have done this have installed an extra pump for the drag of the filter? Without the lifter pump does this put a bigger strain on the stock pump, or could the stock pump be done away with altogether in place of one BIGGER pump?
The standard in-tank Hutch mod requires no lift pump. The mod eliminates air getting sucked in through the Ford quick-connects that are meant for pressure, not suction. It also eliminates the worthless mixing chamber, removes the screen in the bottom of the pickup foot, extends the return port away from the pickup, and adds a pre-pump filter. I think the lack of air getting sucked through the lines would be better for the stock pump.
The extra lift pump mod helps keep the fuel pressure up, IIRC, but is NOT necessary for the standard Hutch mod.
You're right, Joe. The pump is not absolutely necessary. I did it on mine a couple of weeks ago anyway because of some folks having posted that they could hear the OEM pump sounding like it was struggling a little more after the pre-pump filter was installed.
The pump I put in seems to have hurt my mileage a little, I am thinking, because I get a noticeably faster throttle response right now, and have been playing with it a bit (sort of lilke I would expect from putting in Jody's chip). I'm also getting more smoke when I stomp it, which I cannot explain. Although I believe I'm getting higher pressure in the line to the filter bowl, I have not yet adjusted the FPR, so I really should not be getting higher pressure to the injectors yet. Perhaps its just the faster response time on the fuel flow.
I believe that you're absolutely correct, Dan. If I were doing it all over again, that's what I would do too. Simpler, quieter, and not much more cost, if any.
