I'm getting ready to install a set of hardened valve seats in my 460 heads. Does anyone know how much of a press fit for these? I've heard .005" to .007" and want to verify this dimension with someone who knows for sure. Can anyone help me out?
466, how much press fit depends on what the new seats are made of. At my work we install seats with .003 or .004 press fit. Are you trying to do this at home or is a machine shop doing it for you ? I can't imagine how to get them in without the equipment at the shop. We order seats from our supplier that come with instructions for what size cutter to use to get the right fit- what does your seat manufacturer recomend for fit ? DF
What I have learned is that the seat cutter usually bores the counterbore in the head "to size", and the seat insert will have the interference built into its outside diameter measurement. There's probably some exceptions out there...
For example, the 1-3/4" seats I bought for my 400 measure 1.755 inch on the OD and are to be installed into 1.750" counterbores.
I am sure you understand that the correct interference is essential to make sure the seat inserts stay put in the head. Many companies (Goodson, Kwik-Way, K-line/Atlas, etc) also sell a special fluid to help lock the inserts in place as well as aid heat transfer. Loctite 600 series won't work due to the operating temperature.:-X23
Install the inserts with the OD chamfer/radius entering the counterbore first. Use a piloted driver to prevent the seat insert from "cocking" and shaving the counterbore to some larger diameter.
