Got to thinking about a few different engine swaps I would like to do with my new pickup. Its a 67 F100 2WD. It has the original 352 in it but I want somthing else in case the FE doenst work out for me.
1) Transplant 460/429. Pretty strait ahead, new perches, transmission, but what about the driveshaft?? Do I have to have a driveshaft fabricated or is there a shaft i can get from a donor vehicle that will fit perfectly after the swap??
2) Transplant 351C What all is needed for this swap?? I can get the engine and tranny no problem but what hardware am I going to need?? Perches?? Motormounts?? And the driveshaft again, is there a donor i can get that from???
Nitro, what ever do you mean in case the FE doesn't work out ? FEs are wonderful, some of the very best stuff Ford ever made. In fact the FE series engine just might be the pinnacle of human achievement on the planet earth. A healthy 390 can make more than 400 hp without even breathing hard, why are you trying to make things hard on yourself ?? DF
I understand that you are a big FE person. But from what I keep seeing in Hi-Po magazines is lots of parts for the 351C and 429/460. I have hardly seen many custom pistions and rods available for a FE block. I may very well be lookin in the wrong spot. But the availability of parts has led me to these decisions. Show me where to find good Hi-Po parts for an FE and Ill look into it.
Nitro, anything you might possibly want is available for the FE. Let us know what piece you are looking for and I'll help you find it. Most of the warehouses (summit, Jegs, PAW) have the FE stuff even if they don't advertize it. If it were me I would use a Ford block, '105's are nice, ported D2TE-AA heads and a Ford or Scat crank. Bigger valves are available from Manley and Speed-Pro and SBI. Pistons from TRW/speedpro or KeithBlack or Ohio. Cloyes makes a nice double chain, Crane offers several cams. Mellings does a nice M57HV for FEs and Blue Thunder and Edelbrock offer intakes. It is all available if you know what to ask for. DF
Should you decide to pursue the Cleveland, it shares the same motor mount and bell housing bolt pattern as the 351W, 302, 289, etc. In '72, I think, you could get a F-150 with a 302. The perches out of one of those trucks will line you right up. I went this route when I put a 351W in a '67 a few years back. Same goes for the trans. if you are running a stick. Just swap to the small block bell housing. You can get away with that on some automatics, too. Lengthening or shortening the prop shaft is relatively inexpensive. Check with a heavy truck shop. They build drive shafts all the time. All they need is the old shaft and your new length. Shortening runs about $50, but lengthening requires a new tube and is closer to $100.
You sound quite knowledgeable about building the big block Ford motors. I have an '88 E350 with a 460 in it. I'd like to replace it with a healthy (read more power and not dripping oil) engine. I like the 460 and am pushin 4x with 35's. The current motor has EFI. Will I have to replace the existing EFI to take advantage of a "hotter" motor? I was planning to add headers and a less restrictive exhaust.
I'm considering building the replacement while keeping the rig running. Any suggestions on purchasing a built motor versus starting with a new/reconditioned core etc?
