I currently have a 351 injected Weazer (windsor) in my 4wd 91 f150 custom, This engine is no fun at all, I have had a couple of 351 clevelands built that have been sitting in my shed for a little while, Both engines putting out around 368 to 375 hp at the fly. I would like to know if anyone has done a similar conversion? Just having a quik look at the f150's engine bay it looks like the sump for the clevo needs to be reversed, also the steering may come very close to the extractors? I have been told tha t the bellhousings are interchangable but im not to sure? any help would be appreciated Thanks
If you have an auto tranny it's probably computer controlled by the same box that controls the engine. If so making a carb'd motor work is way more complicated than just bolting it in there.
The cam in that '91 is beyond sad, but the good news is the computer will tolerate an upgrade. Consider the Comp Cams 35-255-5 or the Crane in my signature line. That along with headers and a decent exhaust will transform the motor. No, it won't be like driving a cleveland powered mustang bit it will be a LOT more fun. If you want 350HP that's no problem either, but you will have to replace the whole top end of the motor and upgrade the fuel system. Ca-ching$$$!!
Thanks for the help guys, I think i wil still go through with the swap and ill keep you updated, The boys are all organised for this weekend so fingers crossed. I had to replace the 9 inch as well as it spat its chips, Apparently these diffs are prone to crapping out in these trucks , I replaced it with a strange housing so no more split gears and housings for me. The gearbox is the 5 speed that was rebuilt about a year or so ago by the previous owner so hopefully that should be ok. I have a 2.5 inch dual system and a set of genie extractors to go on that may need a bit off modification around the steering column. Does anyone know if i can use the sump off the winsor? the old mechanic at work seemed pretty adament that i could? if not ill cut reverse and weld the clevo's to suit
It should bolt up ok. Same bellhousing bolt pattern and mount location. These engines are not identical but pretty damn close. Has to be if a cleveland head will bolt up to a windsor block to make the famous boss302. Otherwise known as a "clevor". Yes,the exhaust is different but that can be handled with shorty headers of some sort. The oil pan issue can also be resolved. It just depends on how much fabricating you want to get into. I have a cleveland in a 70 mach1 that is a blast. Good luck with it. I think it will work quite nicely.
djdemon, you can put cleveland heads on a windsor block but it is not a simple bolt-on task...there are a couple of water passages that have to be plugged or something along those lines. There's a Clevor thread in the small block forum farther down the main page that should be able to give all the details on what is involved with fitting cleveland heads on a windsor block.
the oil pan from the 335 series engins (351m/400) are not interchangable with the clevland motor. the front and rear mains are different size, I can not recall off the top of my head the actual measurements, but I am 99.9% sure the mains on the cleveland motor are smaller. this means the oil pan will not seal.
How ever the oil pick up from a rear sump wendsor should bolt up to the clevlan pump.
My dad and I made an oil pan to put a clevland in a fox mustang a few years ago. we took the clevland oil pan and a double sump wendsor pan from a 79 merc, and cut the top couple of inches off of each, and then just welded them to gether. of course we had to remark the dip stick for proper oil level, which is eas on inital fill of the engine after a run cycle the oil filter is full and you know you havent lost any oil so the level on the dip stic is correct (as long as you put the proper amount of oil in 6 qts) so we scribed a new fill line so we would always know where full is.
C heads will fit a W block if ya do the rite mods to them. 1st theres a water pasage(square hole) on the head that needs to be blocked off 2nd you will need to drill a hole in the head so the water can go to the intake.3rd a special intake is needed. this was a common hot rod thing back in the 70's threw the late 80's the almost imposible thing now would be to find an intake for the C heads on a 351w block, a intake for the C head on a 302 block are still out there just look for a stock boss 302 intake
