Kurt, what your friend is talking about is replacing the main leaf spring. They have, or you can have your spring done, the eyelets are bent on the reverse side of the original spring. In otherwords, the eyelet hole is bent up versus down. You can't flip the spring around or reverse the spring and mount it, it won't work. I have the reverse eye springs on my truck. Yes, it will lower it about 1 inch. Keeping the suspension the same? No way! Everytime you lower the truck, whether its reverse eye springs or removing the leafs, the axle moves closer to the frame rail, resultling in a loss of suspension travel. The only way to keep your travel is to use a drop axle.
You can reverse the original main leaf easily. It has been discussed in the forum in the past. The eye is not reversed but rather the camber in the spring is reversed by cold working over the length of the sping with either something such as a piece of railroad rail turned on it's side and pound with a sledge to revers the camber or do it with a press working gradually over the full length of the camber. I did mine the latter methos in my small press. That is basically what a spring shop will do if you bring them your spring (main leaf). Always work the spring cold.
Bruce, you raise a good question . Why were the extra leafs added. In my case the PO (my dad) to just increase payload and raise back of truck. Truck was parked in 78 and revived from coma in 2001. Since then only had about 300 miles put on it. I have extra set for front, I can always go back. I do not have extra set for rear though. I'm a little afraid of taking that spring pack apart. My vise is only 6 inch. I don't know how much these will want to arch when anchor bolt is undone. Anyone thats done have any ideas on how far the spread appart, ie how big of vise I need. Thanks for all the input guys . Kurt G. Y-blocks rule.
