My brother borrowed my truck and somehow he messed up the key switch on it. He then proceeded to take it apart and replace the key switch and put it back together. I get home I hear the story and am pleased with him for taking action after borrowing my truck. Now I have another problem since he pulled off the steering wheel and changed that out it only goes in reverse. What on gods green earth did he do and how do I fix it?
Please post year of truck, model, engine and transmission. I`m sure someone will be able to help you. Although it sounds to me as if you have a problem not connected with the replacement of the ign. switch.
Actually it won't move anywhere I was just taking their word for it that it would only go in reverse. I think this has to do with some little gears in the steering column from when they changed the key and they took that whole thing apart because it won't start either. Does anyone have a exploded view of the innerds of the column or could you give me some specific instructions on how to get the shift lever to work and how to make that actuator rod work.
Sounds as if thr ign. switch actuator is broken or not connected to the key switch. You will have to pull the steering wheel, remove the turn signal plate and then remove the steering column shroud. You will see that the small gear wheel on the key switch meshes with a rack on the ign switch actuator. There is a thin "leg" on the actuator that enters a square slot in a plate just above the shift lever, this is what locks and unlocks the lever. You may find yours is broken. If you do a search of this forum you will find a superb step by step proceedure for doing all this.

Okay I don't want to sound like too big of a douche here but I have searched and found nothing. What should I do the search under? I tried "shift lever", actuator, changing actuator. and I got notta.
Sorry for delay in reply. I think the thread was "Won`t shift out of Park" or something similar. However once you have the column shroud off you will see the actuator. You will see a thin rod connected to it. You need to drive the small roll pin out and then you can remove the actuator. If you have tilt steering you will have to withdraw the two pins at the hinge and ease the column towards you to get the new actuator in. It all takes about 2 hours. Try going back thru previous posts rather than doing a search as the post I described was about a month ago and may still be on the list.
