How do you guys store multiple loose socket sets. looked in the toolbox and there has to be 50 socket all over the place with no home was thinkin or deviders to seperate metric and standards but was curious how you guys handle this
That's pretty sweet. I just throw mine in the box, but i do have some socket rails I need to get around to using. Maybe now that my trailer is done, I can finally get in there and organize a bit.
I want the pegs, but I can never find a full set -- and if I don't buy a full set at once, I'll spend the rest of my life "meaning to" complete it.
I don't know who made 'em, but one of my friends has a set of plastic blocks with socket-sized holes they set in. But for a length of 2x4, a good set of drill-bits and a lot of patience...
I don't keep mine in a toolbox-they are on the wall behind my workbench arranged in an old wooden spice rack I pulled out of the neighbors trash a couple of years ago. It works fine for me as I usually only use 3/8 - 5/8 sockets either regular or deep. My metrics are in a separate tool box in which I laid plywood sheets cut out for the sockets and ratchets. The wrenches are in the foam wrench organizer in the box. My craftsman wrenches hang in the plastic carrier in which they came when purchased.
My buddies are typically surprised how well that darn spice rack works though, as am I!
I use the rails at work, but they are on a 8"x16" piece of sheet metal with a handle on one end. I have 3 of them, they hold about 80% of my sockets, from 1/4" to 1/2" drives, ranging from 1/8" to 1-1/2" sockets, metric and standard, and some Torx thrown in too.
Rails by themselves suck. They work really great if they are secured to stand up. My setup has 4 rails per "board". Another guy at work took all his sockets home one day, bought a bunch of rails, and set out to screw them into some plywood cut to fit in his top deep drawer. I gave all my old rails to our apprentice so he had something to keep his sockets from rolling around.
I really need at least 2 more of what I've got, to get all my sockets organized, and maybe one more after that for tool expansion. Then that will free up another drawer, as they'll all be on the top shelf under the lid.
At home, I have one metric peg organizer for 3/8" drive. As my work tools get upgraded, the cheaper stuff finds its way into my home tool box.
I'm not sure if Sears sells the one that I have any more. It's a red chunk of steel with a bunch (15 or so) of short rails on it. It uses the same clips that regular rails do. It holds everything that you need and sits flat in the bottom of a drawer. It's completely adjustable to your needs. I think it's similar to the peg style plates that someone else has mentioned.
