Rear gas tank removal

I was going to drop the rear tank and replace it with the new OEM one that I picked up (rust in the old one). After reading the Haynes manuel on it, I thought it should be easy. Get under there only to see there is very little room to remove the fuel line etc. What is the best way to do this? Drop it down a little to give myself some more room, or are the lines just going to get in the way. Also when I was at the Ford dealership, they said that the front tank is no longer made so where can I get a new one of those as well?

Thanks for any help guys!

I have a 76 shortbox. It has a rear tank. It has two straps that hold it in place. each strap has a tension bolt at on the inside of the frame that helps hold the tankin place. I found the best wat to get to it was to remove the bed.

I was suprised when I dropped my tank. Took all of 15 minutes. A PO had cut the fuel line in front of the crossmember and spliced the line with a section of rubber hose. Was pretty handy

I dropped mine, wasn't much of an issue at all other than not having a creeper.

If you're heavyweight, you may have a hard time getting under and up there. I'm skinny so I could slip to the front of the gas tank and remove the electric sending unit and the feed with my hands feeling about the area. It will take some time, but you'll get there.

For me, I think the whole thing was easy to do.

The truck is waaay high enough to get under there without ramps or anything. I can basically almost sit upright under it, so that shouldn't be a huge problem. I can see most of the stuff but can't tell what is going to get caught on the frame right below it if I start to drop it and don't have everything disconnected.

There are only three things that is connected to the gas tank.

1) The fuel filler rubber hose.
2) Electric sending unit
3) Feed line (rubber section from tank to the frame...)

And 4) if applicable, the EVAP return rubber hose. It's in the vicinity of the sending unit.

If you still have the spare tire bracket, get rid of it or at least disconnect it.

The gas tank edges will hit the frame. You have to rock/slide it diagonally in order to slide it out.

i would take the bed off. it just makes the job easier. the last 2 years in a row now, excluding this year, i've replaced tanks in most of my trucks. getting the bed off makes getting at lines and sending units MUCH easier.

not to hijack this thread or anything... but I am looking to instal a new fuel filler hose/vent hose assy. Due to my truck not having either at the time of my purchasing it. Will I have to remove my bed to do this?

I've replaced 2 tanks in 2 different trucks. One a 78 long bed, dropped it right out from underneath. The other a 78 short bed and that thing was not coming out from below. I was replacing the bed anyway and it was alot easier coming out from the top. Either one could have been replaced before, I don't know for sure. Try it from below first. If that doesn't do it just do like hp246 said and take the bed off. Good luck.

Just took my single rear tank off a few months back on my longbed Supercab 2wd. It was easier than I expected. I doused the four retaining bolts for the tank straps for days in PBlaster, crawled under the truck without having to jack it up, loosened the rear bolts first(but didn't remove them...) and then removed the front two bolts to gain access to the sending unit and fuel line connections. I got the ground for the sending unit and the sending unit lead off easily, but I cut the rubber fuel hose connecting the metal line to the tank - removing the fitting wasn't possible in my case. The tank just kinda rubs as you lower it and if there's not much fuel in it, it may just hang there until you're ready to remove all four bolts. Oh, and I also replaced my filler and vent hoses, so I just cut my old ones in order to remove the tank.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
