So I do not lose my ball or trailer to a five finger discount, I tack weld the threads after the nut using a low (#2) setting on my MIG welder. Pretty much makes it impossible to lose the ball if the nut becomes lose.
Why not just put a tack from the nut to the threads, so then it wont ever come loose - instead of just after the threads so you dont loose it "when" it comes loose. Never is better than when, in my book.
Mine has never come loose, and by the look of the threads, it would take a lot to get it loose, has been on there for quite some time...
