if you use an IRS also, then it wouldn't be a bad idea. if using leafs in the rear, then I wouldn't. There's reasons why, but it's a lengthy discussion.
Havi,
Some of us in the midst of our builds on F1 trucks would probably benefit greatly from your thoughts on when to box, and when to not. Maybe a whole new thread on the subject would be worth the time?? Thanks...

Bob,
In a few words, my understanding is that the original frame is designed to flex with the leaf spring setup. An IFS or IRS doesn't need the flex so stiffening the frame will make it work better. So basically, box an IFS/IRS frame but don't box a parallel leaf spring setup or straight axle.
Vern summed it up pretty well. To add a bit, a 460 putting torque to the rear will cause a "twist" in force to the rear axle. With a solid axle on leafs, it could pull one tire off the ground or atleast break them loose and send the rear sideway a bit.....the flexy frame alleviates that by allowing the tires to stay in contact. A boxed frame will more than likely increase the chance of pulling a tire up and off the surface, or atleast on the outside edge of the tire. The IRS would keep the tire tread in full contact (even if it's only one tire, he he) thus increasing traction and a quicker launch. There's also axle wrap, and other things, but that's kinda the jist of it. BTW, I'm no expert on this per se, but "HOT ROD" magazine had some articles on this a short few years ago.
If you decide to box the front only, be sure to > the boxing plate where it ends. In other words, don't stop the plate vertical. That releaves the stress where the boxing ends. I hope that made sense. Rod....
Thanks for all the input, we've made quite a bit of progress over the weekend.
....Havi could you refer me to what issues (i have a few years of copies) would like to read the article.
will keep all posted on the progress
Boy, IIRC it was 1998. I pulled the articles that interested me, and tossed the rest. I can look, but it may take a couple days...everything is boxed up for the move.
