Hey guys new to the forum as with the Powerstroke motor as well. I was a diesel mechanic in the military but mainly worked on Cummins motors.
Anyways I just traded in my 2004 Cobra for something that suited me more and I could get more out of. It's a 2003 F-250 Turbo Diesel, bought it with 58,000 Miles it now has 60,000 with now problems what so ever. I did and osasis report on it from the dealer and it came out clean. Power was great on it till today......started it up today and like I always do let it warm up on idle for about 10 mins. Was driving and man it felt like it lost half it's power. If I slam on it cruising at about 50 MPH it takes about 10 seconds just to gain 5 MPH. It stays with the pedal down at 3,300 RPM's for ever. I don't have any idea on what it could be and just checking to see if you guys might have a clue.
Only thing I have done to it since I bought it was change both fuel filters.
If anyone could help me out.....would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.....
Check the intercooler system/tubes for a boost leak. If none is found I vote stuck vanes in the turbo. Check the tech folder at the beginning of the 6.0 forum for the cleaning procedure.
BTW--welcome to FTE. There's a ton of useful information if you use the search function and DAYS of reading. I'm sure one of our resident tech's will be along to assist you further.
He's only got 60000 miles, he doesn't need to clean the turbo. Take it to the dealer and let them wory about it (covered by 5year 100000mile warranty), most of them will end up giving you a new/reman turbo instead of cleaning it. I do agree that it is likely the problem though, as small leaks usually tend to give off a loud whistle noise.
Well istead of doing this first which I feel stupid for saying......but I checked the air Filter and the little intake tube that leads up into the housing from the fender area was pluged with leafs and such.....cleaned that out took it out for a test and yup that was it. I have never seen that before happen but it was somthing I should checked first in the first place.
Thanks for the help guys but if the problem re-occurs I will let you all know. Thanks....
Glad you got it figured out. Did your air filter restriction gauge register a problem? I would hope if the airflow was blocked enough to cause that much of a difference in power it would have shown up as needing changed (even though it was the intake not the filter that was clogged).

What about the big tube that goes directly into the front of the filter????? Did you unsnap the clips and look at the airfilter itself? And I'd be interested to see if the filterminder was tripped also, but I thought it would throw a CEL if it did?

Yes i agree, the filter or large tube should be clogged and the filterminder should be tripped if the engine is suffering power loss from air intake restriction. Having only the small bypass intake tube plugged won't do it.
I still vote for sticking turbo vanes. Many times when the vanes stick on the turbo it is an intermittant occurrance at first, which appears to be what you are experiencing. You had a low boost from sticing vanes, now the vanes have moved and the truck performs again. This cycle will continue until the turbo is cleaned most likely.
Nah it wasnt the by-pass tube it was the big one that leads into the filter housing if you are standing in front of the truck.
Interesting. I wonder if you had a bird or some animal make a nest in there. I've had mine zoodaded since almost day 1 and barely even get a bug in there. I have had, however, chipmunks try to make nests in some really weird places.
surprised air filter light did not come on if that was the case. 2003 models did have the light correct???
Thats what I was wondering too.....I should have hod something come on right? I would of thought the mass air meter would of triggered something off as well.....?
