I have a 98 F-150. Recently the speedometer stopped working. When you start the truck, put in gear (forward or reverse) and move slightly, the needle moves to about 38 MPH and remains there, whether I am going slow or fast, forward or reverse. When I kill the truck, the needle slowly returns to zero. What is the problem?
i think it might be your GM modual. that is what controls the speedometer on my 1999. does your truck have ABS. if it has four wheel ABS the light might stay on too. this hapened to my 1999 f-150 when they tried to reprogram my new tires in the trucks computer
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Aug-02 AT 07:41 PM (EST)]I have a simular preblem with a 93 F-350 Diesel. The speedometer instantly jumps to Max needle deflection as soon as the truck begins to move. What is a GM module and do you think that might be my problem too?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Aug-02 AT 04:54 AM (EST)]My speedometer is reading about 10 mph high, about 14 higher in the twenties and 8 in the sixties. I verified this with a GPS system and the accuracy is what I would suspect if you just added 10 mph. I just bought it used so possibly the gauge had been worked on and they put the needle on wrong. Does anyone know if the needle can just be pulled off and re-positioned? Don't want to just rip it apart to find out or damage it. The only other thing I can imagine is some kind of noisey VSS sensor. I doubt this because it tracks so well.
