Oil Consumption
Is this a race truck?
How did the Mystery oil stop the oil burning? Guess thats why they call it mystery oil A!
Never though igintion would cause an engine to burn oil this soon on a rebuild.
Never had one burn oil like yours either so I don't know..but it's not the ignition.
Why the mustery oil stopped the bruning of oil? It is Mystery oil you know.
Honestly I don't have much experience with the stuff, but my one friend swears by the stuff. What he knows about mechanical stuff compared to me is like a shot glass versus a fifty gallon drum.
I would guess it is a good fuel stabilizer and therefore you get a much more consistant burn with it in the gass and therefore it counteracted the desire of the gas to detonate early and rattle the rings and also gives you a better ear for the opperation of the engine.
I only run 92 or better octane gas, so I can't do better than that.
Before the smoking, right after fire over, it was running rich, and the vacum guage agreed with the carb adjustments I made to drop the initial jets from 64 to 62.
It was really after the first 500 miles this problem with the pinging started, which is because I was starting to drive it on the highway to begin fine tuning the engine.
This is a real PIA if you get me. I'll let everybod know how it turns out.
Thanks for all the help!

You are probably losing 2 to 3 mpg by not having a good performing vacuum advance.
And you need to be able to run more than 10 degrees initial in order to have real good acceleration.
Also suggest running at least 89 octane.
If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:

I got the MSD stuff on there and the bungs in the exhaust......
I will say this about those guys at Holley: The had the carb setup perfectly right out of the box, at least according to the O2 sensors and FAST.
I got the timing set at 14 initial, and used the third slowest advance curve and the spark knocking is gone and so is the smoking.
