91 brakes-all new, same problem

Hopefully this is the right place to post this message. I have a 91 Bronco with new all the way around brake pads, drums, discs, rotors, calipers, cylenders and all new brake line put in recently, but still the same problem--rear antilock and e-brake light comes on after touching the brakes sometimes. And soon after that, the back starts sticking and locks up. I pull over and let it cool and release--20 minutes--then I can go again. Sometimes it just locks up without the rear antilock and e-brake light on the dash coming on. I rarely use the brakes to try and keep it from locking up--just downshift, but still the problem occurs randomly. My Dad has done all the work on it, he's a non professional Ford mechanic. But can't figure out the problem and is stumped. Any suggestions I can tell him to try?

Sounds to me like you have a stuck ABS valve. It doesn't allow the rear brakes to retract enough, they get stick and get hot. Eventually the springs get the better of it and they unstick.

A new ABS valve is expensive and Ford's RABS on these trucks is garbage, so what I would do is pull the fuse for the ABS computer, pull the light out of the dash, and replace the abs module with a chunk of brake line. The bleed the system out real good (this is why the valve got gummed up to begin with, dirty brake fluid) and you're good to go.

i agree the rear abs is kinda of a joke on these rigs. i had a 9" rear axle in my 88 bronco which canceled out the abs. do as andym said. good luck.

I will "third" the sentiment on the RABS on these trucks. With only ONE axle that has ABS you aren't gaining much anyway since 60% (or more) of the braking is done by the FRONT axle anyway.

This may or may not be related to the problem in this case, but I thought I'd throw it in under "grabby rear brakes". There are 2 different rear shoes for these trucks, a shorter leading shoe and a longer trailing shoe. If the shoes are not installed correctly the rear brakes exibit a bad tendancy to lockup under even moderate braking pressure.

good call conanski , i second that thought. might be worth a look thats for sure. also making sure proper bleeding procedure is followed. you must start at the right rear tire then left rear, front right then left right in that order

ok, you guys have been very helpful. I am gonna print all these replies and give it to my Dad and hope he can get a day off to take care of it. I hope I haven't wasted any of your time. I'm just a girl who can pass this all on to Dad. I so appreciate all the response. I will definitely post the results when I get it taken care of. I'm sure Dad has a chilton to be able to find where the fuse for the ABS computer is. At least I hope so.

Ok, Dad unplugged the fuse that was labeled antilock brake, is there something else that needs to be unplugged? Possibly under neath in the rear? Or under the hood? Just seems too easy to be only the fuse under the dash that needed to be pulled. That was only tonight he did it, and so far the lock up didn't happen again, but I only went 6 miles. And didn't use the brakes much. We'll see. If there is something else that needs disconnecting and anyone knows, please post it. Sorry if I'm wasting anyone's time. Thanks for any and all replys

Nope, that should disable the entrie RABS system. Seems "too simple" but it should resolve any issues related to the RABS since the system is now offline (no electricity, no RABS). And since the braking system will continue to function as a standard braking system even if the ABS portion fails, you should be good to go... er um... STOP!

If only all the problems we have with these trucks, were such a simple fix.
Good call guys. Hopefully your tips help out this young lady to get her rig on the road.

What fixed it? Just pulling the fuse?
