I have a 2002 f-350 power stroke diesel and the a/c compressor shuts off at low rpm, like when you exit the freeway. It runs fine at all other rpms, just not whent the rpms drop off to idle. Can any one tell me what the problem is?
The a/c cools fine at highway speed and at low speed, just when you go from high rpm to low rpm the compressor shuts off. I haven tried checking the air gap yet.
so to clarify, clutch only disengages when you go from high rpm to idle. does the clutch re-engage right away or 30 seconds or a minute or what? does it cycle @ idle.
how does it cool at idle?more info please.

I'm starting to wonder if this isn't built into the clutch operating logic in the PCM for some reason. It seems to be cooling well, if I'm understanding things correctly.
How do you know the compressor is cutting out. Have you actually seen it, or does the vent temp go up when you decelerate, causing you to assume the compressor is cutting out.
I have same problem with 2001 f250. When engine starts, A/C cools just fine. After few minutes at low RPM it shuts off. I step on the gas for higher RPM, the A/C comes on fine for few minutes until the RPM start going down again.
When I hit the clutch with a broomstick the clutch re-engages and A/C starts cooling

That sounds like you have a loose connection to your coil. When you raise the RPM, you get higher voltage and higher amperage to 'jump' across a bad connection. You might be able to unplug and plug in the connection a few times and find that it fixes it.

That's caused by the clutch gap being too wide. Remove the center bolt, slip the clutch plate off and remove one of the shims between the plate and compressor shaft. You want less than .020".
Any news on figuring out what occured with your clutch. I'm interested in hearing how this problem was answered so I can have it for future reference when discussing this problem later on. Thanks!

lsrx101, how do you get the clutch not to rotate while trying to get the 8mm bolt loosened? Do you need a special tool to hold it down or would a block of wood and a large c-clamp work?

I just use a long box wrench. Slip the box end over one of the "nubs", use my socket as a fulcrum, and let the arm of the wrench rest against something solid while loosening or tightening the bolt.

When I took my clutch plate off to remove the shim I turned the A/C switch on and turned the key on do not start the engine. That will hold the plate from moving while you loosen the center bolt. Then turn the the key off and take the clutch plate off. When you get ready to tighten the center bolt turn the key back on to keep the plate from moving.
Thanks to both Jim and Steve, got the clutch plate off and removed 1 shim retightened took her for a spin 2.5miles parked it and retightened the bolt took one more spin checked the bolt and its on tight and appear to have nice frosty air. Will update tomorrow afternoon when I get off work as the true test appears more when we hit 95+ degrees in the afternoon.
