After dealing with turbo fart and lack of power when towing, my turbo was almost dead. I have taken it to 2 different dealers and was told the modification I had made voided the warranty(exhaust, intake, edge programer). So I tried a third dealership, and they told me today, a new turbo is installed and I owe the $100 deductible. After all this time, I finally will have my X back working properly. The dealer is Paradise Ford in Cocoa, Florida, if anyone is needing a dealership thats tries to help.
thanks for the input, glad you got it solved.......same thing happened to my brother with his Ex minus the two denials. Ford dealer in Canton, NC exit 31 off of I-40.....no problem with mods.
OK, I'm showing my naivete... What is turbo fart? I get a high-pitched whistle/beeping when towing my travel trailer on inclines. It sounds as if a fan kicks on for 5-10 seconds then I get this high-pitched whistle/constant beep for 10-15 seconds and then it goes away. I've read that others are experiencing this same thing but most have said it is normal and not a big deal... Is this turbo fart???
when you back off the throttle at low speed(for me) you will hear a "whop, whop, whop" type sound I need more info on it myself as my truck does do it.
What I call turbo fart is upon acceleration, the turbo acts likes it is failing, and you are losing boost. For the longest time I thought my transmission was going bad, the feed back comes near the pedals. Pulling my boat approx. 8,000lbs. trying to come up to speed, you would hear and feel an aweful shutter noise, get off the gas and it will subside, accelerate and it returns. This did not happen everytime I trailered, maybe 30% of the time. This last week it could not shake the farts, so I guess my turbo was hours away from dumping. This video from another forum user is what I am talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_531IQ9nRw

that's good to hear....maybe I don't have it then...

That vid, especially about the 2:10 mark, is EXACTLY what my truck did before it blew the cold side tube off and the turbo tanked. I was accelerating while towing up a hill and it started that coughing, then a minute later...BOOM! All was quite peaceful after the hose blew off, but made a huge sucking/blowing sound everytime I got on the accelerator.
I dont know if any of you have had your turbos replaced, but mine is not quite the same as my old unit. It is a completely different style. If I dont let my engine warm for 5 minutes, it cant get out of its own way. It takes the turbo about 3 seconds to spool up when cold, makes it difficult to pull out in traffic. Has anyone experienced this?

That has almost always been the case with mine (old and replacement), but it doesn't matter if it's cold or warm. Sometimes it seems to do fine with minimal turbo lag, but other times, especially when you need it...???
Last time in, the tech had it for about a week and didn't mention anything about turbo lag, but I'm going to have it test driven next time it's in for service.
I have the exact no boost symptom now with lots of fart on deceleration. The dealer had the truck for a week and gave it back saying it needed the EGR cleaned. I told him no way I changed it myself two weeks ago. Well after being out about 20 miles with exact problems the CEL came on again. So my X is back at the dealer again. Maybe this time they will fix my Turbo.
I have an '01 7.3 with an AFE intake and a 4" MBRP and lately I can't get it to downshift sometimes when pulling a grade with or w/o the trailer and it gets a harmonic hum and it sounds as if there is another fan that comes on..I have to pull up a 12% grade into my backyard and it gets a rattle and the buzz and I've wondered if I've got something going out or if my exhaust is hitting somewhere.( I did have it installed by a good shop). The turbo seems to wind up pretty good w/o a load, but when towing just seems to need a lot of throttle...
After my turbo was replaced on my `05 Ex, I noticed a big loss in performance and big gain in turbo lag!! It is scary now when trying to pull in traffic; especially with A/C on. It seems like Ford detunes every time my Ex is in the dealership; which it spends more time there than with me
