just a thought i had, was just wondering how hard it would be to switch them out? besides cutting the wholes in the floor for the shifter and the clutch pedel plus the linkage, any other problems or issues? thanks for the help.
I did this recently on my '91 F150. It was well worth it, but you will want a manual trans parts truck to make it as easy as possible. There's a lot more to swap than just the trans. Here's a pic I found when doing mine of everything that is required:
Well, almost everything - you also need a manual trans steering column.
Well, I suppose you don't strictly *have* to have one if you don't mind your column having an auto shifter sticking out of it, or a bump/hole on the side after you remove the shift lever. I wanted my truck to look like it came from the factory with a 5-speed, so I swapped out the column as well as the dash panel on the lower right where the OD button was.
I bought a parts truck with the ZF in it for $800. It had everthing I needed except the flywheel and pilot bearing, which I think was about $100 (since the parts truck had a 351 and I have the 300). I have since sold the remainder of the truck and my old E4OD for a total of $650, so the swap cost me $250 approximately.
