I went ahead and bought a 1998 Chrysler Cirrus. 2.5-litre V6. Despite all the doomsayers. It had just 35k-miles, literally, little old lady drove it once a week to get groceries. Like straight off the showroom floor. Incredible handling. Too good to pass up.
It has just one little problem - one noisy lifter. Really quite noisy. In the front bank, at the front (that is, the end near the serpentine belt).
It wasn't there at first. Changed the oil the day I bought it. The manual called for 5W30 even in summer, so I put that in, although it took some mental effort not to reach for the 10W30. Then I put on ~1,000 highway miles over the course of a few weeks. And now, I've got this annoying tapping under the rocker cover. Hoping it would disappear the same way it appeared by driving another ~500 miles over a couple of weeks made no change.
Short of opening it up, what can I do to un-stick a sticky-lifter?
I'm real leery of those engine-cleaning oil additives.
I agree with the Marvel idea too. That stuff really works. Another thought - what brand oil filter did you use? I've seen restriction and noise from Fram filter use in a 351w. In my case it would quiet down after a few minutes, but I'll never run a Fram again and I ran them in several motors for many years. A switch to Purolator should flow more oil.
