I drive a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4. My truck is making a strange noise when I accelerate from a dead stop. It usually happens somewhere between 35-40mph. It's the same exact sound that occurs when you run over those little bumps before stop signs and it lasts about the same amount of time. What would cause this? Thanks

OK, a 3.0L, I think they had the 4R44E 4spd auto tranny, if I remember right.
So it makes the noise around 35-40 mph, under load, when accelerating, will it still make the noise at that speed, if you back off on the throttle just enough to maintain the noise speed range, but unload the drive train????
Will it continue to make the noise if you get out of the throttle enough to slow enough, to reverse the load of the drive train????
Will it continue to be noisey if you shift to "N" and coast at the noisey speed range????
Did this problem come about suddenly, after some event, or slowly over time???
i noticed the speed range varies depending on how fast or how slow I accelerate. it started like 4 or 5 days after I got it stuck in the mud.
p.s. not sure if this is helpful but, the 4x4 doesn't work because the hubs are gummed up (that's why i got stuck). i'm replacing them with some manual hubs sometime in the very near future. which is why i haven't cleaned the hubs out.
yea it feels exactly like when you run over those bumps before stop signs. after that there is a subtle vibration that wasn't there before. there is not really any mud still on it just dirt but ill take another look at it just to be sure.
Honestly sounds like the hubs are not dis-engaged, mine stick from time to time. I usually engage it(the switch) for bout 100 feet then disengage then put it in reverse for about 100... and it goies away. I keep putting off changing to manual hubs.
OK, so does the noise & vibration seem to be coming more from the front of the vehicle, rather than the middle (under seat), or the rear end & do you feel the vibration more in the steering wheel, or in the seat????
Have you done the engage 4X4 with the switch, then turn it off & back up routene, since the noise began????
I got on underneath with a water hose and sprayed everything down with a hose. It feels more like it's coming from the front and there is hardly any vibration in the steering wheel. the manual hubs are supposed to be coming in tomorrow so that's good. I haven't thought about doin that. I'll try and let yall know how it goes.
ok i tried that but it is still makin the noise and all. i really think it's the hubs are just gummed up too bad to dis-engage. so i'll wait till tomorrow when I put the new hubs on and everything should go back too normal, hopefully. if yall think of anything else let me know. Thanks

OK the hubs are AVM which we got from Rugged Ridge. when i took the old ones i realized that our assumtions were right the old hubs were engaged and were to gummed up to disengage. I got the new manual hubs on and all is good. i havn't had a chance to make sure the fourwheel drive works though but it shouldn't have a reason not to. when i took the left hub off i noticed that the spline could be pushed in and would spring back out, but the right one did not push in at all; is this bad?. thanks for yalls help.
