I need to know if I have a standard rotation or reverse rotation ring and pinion in my dana 44, the bom on the long tube says 610049-5 and my truck was manufactured in nov 77, i can not find the dana axle codes for rotation of the pinion, I think a reverse pinion sits higher than the axle center line and it looks like it does in my differential, but on my 76 f100 the housings look exactly the same so I am hesitant to order my gears without knowing for sure but I would like to get them ordered soon so i can hopefully install them this weekend
thanks
Assuming you're talking about the front axle (since Ford didn't have a D44 rear), you have a high pinion axle. Even though the rotation is the same on both high and low pinion axles, many people refer to them as reverse rotation, when actually the gears are just cut in reverse so the strong side is on the drive side when going forward. If you say reverse rotation, or reverse cut, or high pinion when you order your gears they will know what you're talking about.
Ford actually used the Dana 44 in the rear. You can find it on a very few late 70's F-100's. They are rare, but out there. I've seen pictures of them here on FTE.
I got my gears and new power lock the other day and yes i got reverse cut gears, today I finally got them set up, I got .007 backlash and the pattern looks good, to bad I have to take it back apart and take out my set up bearings to have my new bearings pressed on, the setup bearings paid for themselves on the fifth time taking out the carrier to move shims, but I learned a lot.
thanks
