I have an 84' f-150 with a 302. It currently has the original 2 barrell carb and intake on it. I want to change it to a 4 barrell. I would like to use an edelbrock performer intake with a Holley carb. Can I do this without failing emissions testing? I'm in Tennessee.
I'd go with a Weiand Action-Plus, and an Edelbrock 600 carb. I have this combo, and it didn't even come within 50% of the emissions standards on the test, and it gets over 13 MPG in my '77 LWB. Plus, with my cam and heads combo, it makes 378 ft*lbs of torque, and 330 HP. It's a great swap, and you'll improve your fuel milage. A Holley will in almost every case make you lose fuel milage, but sometimes they run great, but in any case it will not match the low-end torque and fuel milage of the Edelbrock, and can't touch the reliability and consistency of the P/N 1406 Edelbrock. This message is probably going to be attacked by everybody, especially 76RangerXLT, but I've owned both of them in identical cfm ratings, and for a street truck, there is no comparison, Edelbrock Rocks!
No attack from me John. I've used Holley carbs for years, and then switched to Edelbrock/Carter carbs (one of each-same thing). I had to re-learn how to finetune, since it's nothing like a Holley. I did get better mileage once tuned, and a little better low end torque. Another plus is being inexpensive. Maybe the new Holley models that came out recently are better then the old 1450 and 1460 that I'm familiar with. If I had the extra money to blow however, I would go with the Barry Grant Demon carb.
Rock on, Steve, I was just thinking about those the other day, and I know that the Barry Grant Demons are the best performance carb out there. I've seen many magazine tests where they buttet heads with the best fuelie systems out there, and 100% of the time, the Demon carbs produce more power than any FI system out there, and often even beat them in low end torque.
