Is it possible to clean out the fuel selector valve to make it work again BEFORE I have to drop $96 for a new one? (Ford's pricing and not a rich man...)
Mine is feeding the rear tank from the front tank.
No there is no way to clean it i thought i could and it fell apart and broke. try looking around for a better price like discount ford parts my 1988 has a eight port which is very uncommon and i only paid 65.00 for it.ask for the part number at ford and look it up under discount ford parts that is the best way to go good luck.
Can those valves get stuck midway between the two tanks? What are the symptoms?
The following does not apply to 1990 and newer F-series Trucks. Also it does not apply to 1985 an older F-series trucks.
For the 1986-1989 F-series trucks and the 1988-1990 E-series Vans with the "Mechanical Selector Valve/Reservoir" only.
Yes I have cleaned and freed the "O" ring.
The small "O" ring can get stuck on its shaft and then the return fuel will go to the wrong tank (the front tank only).
This is mostly caused by just running on one tank for a while without switching tanks or the truck has been setting for a while. Then when you switch tanks the spring cannot move the "O" ring on the shaft.

Subford, how would I go about cleaning up and freeing up the "O" ring? You could help a few of us here I think......
I take it you have clicked on the links I posted above.
The ones I have worked on did not need much cleaning and just had stuck "O" rings.
The brass push star washer is the hardest part to get out so I turn that over to my wife and she seems to have the patience to get them out.
If you unscrew the bottom the gasket will stretch and then you will have to buy a fuel filter for an 86 Bronco II to get a new one (throw the filter away).
They are not sold separately.
Other than that just take them apart very carefully, as I do not know where to get new "O" rings and a diaphragm. Although a poster on here one time said he had a friend at Ford someplace and he got a kit with new "O" rings and the diaphragm.
Thank you for the info... definitely shooting for the weekend for that... have my son's car for parts runner should I need it... fuel filter for 86 Bronco II ? LOL... sorry, that just sounds funny...
I have a 1983 F-150 super cab with dual tanks. I know the valves are different because of the Fuel injection on 1985 + trucks. Well, anyways, my truck was sitting for about 5 years on the previous owner's house unused and I bought it a couple of months ago for $85. It was PRETTY BAD cosmetically, but u know those Ford 302 HO V8 don't die easily, so whatever I fixed it up good. I though the fuel selector was dead. First the rear tank was missing, second the fuel selector did nothing when switched, and third, it was sitting on the truck chasis unplugged and looked very inoperable. I looked for the fuel selector fuse, noticed it did not have a fuse plugged, so I plugged the fuse and noticed quickly that a "thump" sound came from the selector. When I moved the switch from rear to front it seemed to switch. The selector was full of dirt and was stuck on the inside (it didn't seal properly, leaked on both inputs at the same time). All I did was fill it up with WD40 lubricant, switch it back and foward so it became unstuck, striked it softly on the outside a couple of times so the dirt got unstuck in the inside, and blowed it on both side real nice with a compressed air gun. I also added some machine oil inside so the rings became unstucked even better with use. I tested it for seal leaks, when a tank is selected, it only gets fuel from the selected input, not the 2 of em at the same time which I think is important. I made a home made 18 gallon flat fuel tank, got some new fuel lines, clear view fuel filter, generic fuel sending unit. When I got everything put thogether, well, it works like a charm. Hope this helps!

Subford.. Could you please repost the picture you have the the exploded view of the sector valve? I have one acting up and would like to try to clean / repair before I replace.
