Transmission problems
Transmission problems
I hauled the 5th wheel and boat to the lake on Friday nite; OD locked out and ran it about 2750 rpms at 60 mph. No problems. When I started back home this afternoon; it won't shift out of 2nd gear. If I put the selector in "2" it will drag the engine down when I let off the gas. If it's in D; I let off the gas, rpms fall to about 1000, but the drive train keeps free wheeling. The engine rev's free till you get it back up to the transmission speed again; then it will start pulling again.
P.S. By the time I got home (1-1/2hr.), the OD light on the gear shift lever was flashing. The transmission temp. stayed normal all the way.
Am I looking at big bucks or is there something simple to hope for ?
Thanks,
Fred

Check your fluid level. It sounds like you're low. Also, pull the dipstick and smell it. I bet by this point is will smell burnt.
Now, since the OD light is flashing, I suspect your transmission is toasted. Factory temp guage is pretty much worthless, from what I hear anyway.

Then you're problems are even bigger.....time for professional help.....your truck, not you !
My advice is for you to find a local transmission shop, not a national chain, to look at your truck. If you can't find one call your local 4x4 shop and ask them for a recommendation.
National chains will want to rebuild your transmission even if you don't need a rebuild. The dealership will just want to replace it (least work for highest profit).
I used to drive a 1995 F-150 4x4 with a 4R70W transmission. At around 120,000 miles it started shuddering and slipping. Called a national chain, without even looking at my truck they said I would need a rebuild, threw out a $1400 estimate.
Called a local shop (Snohomish Transmission, Monroe WA, if you're in the area) they said bring it in. They looked at it, showed me where a gasket had failed, said they would repair it for $80.
I had them flush it and all for another $70.
