I have just started a engine that has not ran for 10 years and I am finding smoke coming out of the valve cover holes. I have know idea why, the only idea is a leaking exaust valve.
I guess what you think is possible to be the problem. I'm kind of thinking it's blow-by. The rings could either be worn, or lost their tension from sitting for so long, or the cylinders could have rust on them. When the engine fires, some exhaust is forced past the rings into the crankcase, along with a good deal of your cylinder pressure. This is called blow-by. This blow-by is then forced through the oil drain-back holes in your engine, coming out the oil fill cap and PCV valve hole. Do a compression check and a leakdown teston your engine. This will tell you what it is for sure. Also try replacing your PCV valve, and go ahead and run it. Maybe the rings will reseat (or valve if that's the problem).
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Jun-02 AT 05:42 PM (EST)]My 302 had a blow-by problem like you say smoke was coming out the valve cover and the filter element in the breather was full of oily supstance. I found that my problem was the plate under the carburator was clogged up. The pcv valve could not do its job so it was blowing out anywhere it could. I removed the carb cleaned the groves in the plate and the line and that ended the smoke signals from the oil filler hole in the valve cover. GOOD LUCK!

i'll go with the theory of your rings needing to reseat. after all that time your cylinder walls will either corrode or just get a bulidup on them. either way thier will be absolutly no oil coating on the cylinder walls unless you pulled the distributer and primed the engine and also squirted a little oil through the spark plug hole. the rings may reseat if they were in good condition the last time the engine was run. however if the rings or walve guides/seals were wore out already they will continiue to have blowby.
