I took tore off my steering wheel a short while ago, and found that the upper bearing in my tilt steering column is trashed. It appears to have a spring load held on by a snap ring, that loads a conical upper and lower bearing.
I did some searches here and in one of the threads someone listed it available at both Napa and Ford. It was too late to run up to my Ford dealer, and Napa says they don't have one.
In another thread someone mentioned a kit containing the bearing, the spring, and some sleve or thrust washer.
Does anyone have any knowledge of these parts and a place to get them ?
But It's for a 1985, mines a 1994 which is very different.
The column bearings are ball rather than needle and have a spring loaded cone that keeps them at zero play, until of course they disintegrate if they are never lubed, LOL.
Well, my Ford dealer didn't have my bearing in stock, but a dealership also owned by them had two, and was only about 5 miles away.
Good thing I had the numbers that was mentioned in a thread that I found in a search here, because Ford has the upper and lower bearings mixed up in their computer.
The upper (smaller) (closest to steering wheel) is # F4DZ-3517-A.
She really returns to center much better now, And no crinkling noises.
