the motor is a 302 out of an 87 grand marquis and i need a distributor with vacuum advance and a steel gear for my carb conversion, any vehicle come stock like that, so i can go to the parts store and order a dizzy for that car.
You want an 85 Mustang Duraspark distributor for the 5.0 HO motor that year. Only one with a roller cam and carbed. Advance Auto Parts sells Reman units for this $55 with a good core to exchange, the exchange dist doesn't have to be the exact thing to be accepted as a core. Any Duraspark distributor will work for this. The part numbers you're looking for are thus; Cardone #302830 (automatic trans) #302831 (manual trans)

How do you wire up the dura spark distributor and does it matter if you get the manual or auto tranny distributor?? Also, can you get an old original point distributor and change the gear on it so it can run on a roller motor?

Yea you can change the gear for a roller motor. Ford Racing offers it and Summit Racing stocks it. The gear runs about $45 and comes with instructions. I've done two points distributors for this. Not hard to do just takes time and patience. A micrometer helps too. I don't know what the difference is between the two units I listed above, but I'm running a manual distributor with an auto transmission.
