I HAVE A 2000 FORD F150 4x4 XLT 5.4L WITH 89,000 MILES AND AM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH ENGINE REEVING UP AT IDLE FOR A SECOND THEN DROPPING DOWN. THIS WILL HAPPEN ABOUT TWICE A MINUTE AT IDLE. I HAVE A K&N FILTER IN STOCK AIR BOX AND I AM CAREFUL TO ALLOW FILTER TO DRY AFTER CLEANING. I HAVE CLEANED THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN INTAKE DUCT WITH CONTACT CLEANER. I AM SPOOKED TO CLEAN THE M.A.S.IN FEAR OF MESSING UP A $400+ PART. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE?
I wonder if it's your Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. That's what controls your idle speed. I need to replace mine because my truck likes to drop down to 400-500 RPM's when coming to a stop...
Thanks, will try cleaning iac valve/Maf this weekend while I install Aem brute force intake--Anybody heard anything good about these? I was a little bummed about the fact that the filter was bent up in shipping but am really excited so I might just put the system on with a bent up filter until the replacement comes in--I think the filter should be fine even though its bent up? Appreciate the help!
Put AEM cold air intake in this weekend and cleaned MAS and IAC sensor and the truck still reeves up but only on an incline. There was a slight amount of oil residue in the original crank case breather tube, is this normal or could this be some of the problem. Where is the IAC valve located? I'm know getting concerned that this may not be a simple fix.
The IAC is going to be on top of the engine and mounted to the throttle body. It looks like a small electric motor. Has two bolts holding it to the throttle body and a wiring connector plugged into it. Good luck!
I'm having the same problem on my 97 f150 4.6 and it also tends to stall.I changed the IAC and it stopped stalling but not completly, the idle is still rough.Let me know if you figure it out.
Changed IAC valve completely last night and wouldn't you know it as soon as I fired the truck up it started doing that reving thing again. I guess my next step is to look for vacuum leaks although I'm not sure were to start! Anyone have any suggestions about what to do next?
It may be the throttle position sensor as well. I worked on an older model ford truck, 1994 I think, that seemed to be searching for the right idle point and it was the tps. Good Luck...
Apon closer inspection of the entire intake system I noticed a loud humming coming from the pcv valve and replaced it. I think that was the issue because truck seems to idle fine now so stevebe1fl you may want to look at that. Thanks to everyone for the advice. Kinda glad this problem happened because now I know that the intake system is clean and with a new IAC valve I swear it runs smoother!
