If you have air coming out of the intake and a vac on the exhaust.....it is NOT timed. Can't be!
If the timing chain is tighter than a banjo string you must have spun the timing belt/chain sproket on the crank. The one with the key way.... Or if it is a pushrod you could have spun the cam drive sproket. Your cam and pistons aren't synchronized if your ex sucks.
I hate to say it, but John sounds rite. Maybe... or even possibly, you have a sheared key way on one of the timing gears??? It still doesn't make sense if you say the timing marks lined up, and the valves were both closed at TDC. This has got to be one of those issues that make you stand back and think. Even if you had the battery hooked up backwards, it wouldn't give you the condition you are talking about (the starter drive won't work in reverse rotation). Please, do tell us what you find.
